Book Reviews of Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Book 1)Book Review: A good Debut!...Anita kicks Butt Summary: 5 Stars
Well, here is where Laurell Hamilton makes here debut with the Anita Blake vampire hunter series.(if memory serves me right).
Well,in case you are wondering, this book is not at all bad.It is exceptionally good for a debut. It has everything you could possibly want in a horror novel. And it is not too long and boring like most books out there.I read it quickly, because the suspense in this novel is great,it keeps you wondering who is the bad guy...I definitely would recommend this book.
Now here is a basic idea of the plot.(nothing too complicated, simple and easy too follow).
Well we get introduced to the idea that vampires have equal rights as humans. They are even protected by law.So in this story a serial killer is murdering vampires, however, and the most powerful vampire in town wants Anita's help.(I know it sounds strange, especially when vampires are the victims and not humans).Anita is hesitant at first, but this powerful vampire"Nickolaos" forces here too find the killer. And believe me when I say that this vampire is really powerful.
So that's the basic plot.Anita, however is not just a vampire hunter. She is also an animator(one who brings back the dead),quite legitimately for paying customers.
The name Guilty Pleasures is the name of a night club run by Jean Claude,a classically styled European origniated Vampire.
As you might wonder, why is it that Anita has too coorporate with Nickolaos?Well the answer is simple.Nickolaos has held Anita's friend hostage. And for a friend, such as this,Anita would do anything!
Anita is so greatly described in this story that men would want her.And women would want to be her.She has all the good moves and she does all the right things at the right time. She is not perfect in her action, but in her looks, she sure is!
This story is told in the first person. As the plot unfolds, there are more twists that a string factory, including a brust with death that leaves Anita with some Vampiric abilities, mostly to do with perception and mind games.
Laurell Hamilton puts a lot of thought into creating and populating this fantastic world. It is familiar enough so that there is no huge effort required to understand the rules, yet different enough to remain enticing!
The cast in this book(apart from Anita)mostly come across as having a life of their own.Very few give the impression of being there purely to support the main character. Those worthy of mention include:Phillip,a guy who gets his kicks form being used and abused by vampires,Rafael the rat king,Edward,a human who is on a mission to kill all vampires, and Malcolm,an enterprising master vampire who runs the church of ETERNAL LIFE.
This is the first church in history that can guarantee you enternal life, and prove it!
This book has a lot of funny stuff in it.And scary as it may be,it is full of humour.Imagine the fact that humans and vampires live under the same law...
There are also alot of other creatures in this book:werewolves, zombies and lots more...
Anita makes "Buffy the vampire slayer" look dumb.If you think buffy is good, thing again.
Because Anita is the boss. And the star of this whole new world..."reading this book is like reading Clive Barker and Anne Rice in one"
Slick, slightly greasy, but never dull,Gulity pleasures is first and foremost a occult themed action thriller. The depth and finesse applied by other authors writing about vampires are deliberately set aside. In their place is the adrenalin kick provided by an ever present threat of violence, the ticking time bomb of supernatural slaughter, and a frisson of forbidden desire!Anita knows that while some vampires can be romantic and charming,at the end of the night they are all Blood suckers."as an amazon for the modern age,she gives wonder woman and super girl a run for their money, but wouldn't be seen dead in star sprangled knickers...enjoy...Nigel
Summary of Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Book 1)When St. Louis?s most powerful vampire comes to Anita Blake for help, she is faced with her greatest fear?a man capable of arousing in her a hunger strong enough to match his own.
Anita Blake may be small and young, but vampires call her the Executioner. Anita is a necromancer and vampire hunter in a time when vampires are protected by law--as long as they don't get too nasty. Now someone's killing innocent vampires and Anita agrees--with a bit of vampiric arm-twisting--to help figure out who and why. Trust is a luxury Anita can't afford when her allies aren't human. The city's most powerful vampire, Nikolaos, is 1,000 years old and looks like a 10-year-old girl. The second most powerful vampire, Jean-Claude, is interested in more than just Anita's professional talents, but the feisty necromancer isn't playing along--yet. This popular series has a wild energy and humor, and some very appealing characters--both dead and alive.
