Book Reviews of Great horses of our time

Book Review: Great horses the world has forgotten and some still famous
Summary: 5 Stars

In a recent poll by the Blood-Horse, Dark Star's 1953 win over Native Dancer ranked as the most shocking Kentucky Derby upset in history. Giacamo's upset in 2005 ranked second - though in 1913 a horse named Donerail paid $184.40 for a mere two dollar wager. Our memory as a culture is very short.
Broker's Tip in 1933 won the race as a maiden - even though the jockey of the horse that finished second - Head Play - engaged his rival jockey in a literal fist-fight on horseback. In 1946 a horse with a club-foot named Assault won the Triple Crown. And finally, the 1924 winner, Black Gold, was owned by a Cherokee woman named Rosa Hoots. In the 1956 Olympics, the incredible duo of Hans Winkler and and the Hanoverian mare Halla won the gold medal in show jumping. Hans Winkler pulled a groin muscle severely in the preliminary round, and could only grasp Halla's mane during the final round. She did it by herself and brought the gold medal home. All of these are fascinating stories, the kind of rich history that can be found in equestian events, if only one can go back farther than the past twenty or thirty years. This is not to discredit the more recent champions - certainly there are many great horses in this group, but so many other remarkable horses have graced the tracks and show rings and hunt courses over the last three hundred years that it is a terrible shame people don't know about them. Great Horses of our Time was a book that I discovered in the public library when I was in middle school. I don't think it was ever checked out more than when I lived in Charlottesville. I studied it and studied it, absorbing every fascinating detail. Twenty years later, I still remember the horses in that book and their stories. The past is not dead - and the horses of the past will stir your heart just as much as any current champion, if only you will let them in. This book is your ticket to the past.
