Book Reviews of Grand Canyon Trail Map 4th Edition

Book Review: Perfect
Summary: 5 Stars

Great view of all trails and durable enough to travel withi. Glad I got it.

Book Review: Only useful for defined trails
Summary: 4 Stars

For what it is, this map is a good purchase. The map is fine for defined trails. I wouldn't rely on it if your trip requires any route finding. I can't find a UTM grid reader for the 1:40000 scale and 2KM squares and they don't have a 100 meter scale on the map for me to easily make my own corner grid. So you can't get great accuracy with UTM. However, GPS can be spotty in the Big Ditch so you shouldn't be reliant on it anyhow. If you need a map for general planning and getting general direction, this is the one to get. If you need detail for route finding, you still need a USGS quad (if you need this, you probably don't need me telling you this). If you're only doing an overnight hike on the Corridor trails, you don't need to buy this. The map they give you with the permit is sufficient. Even though it is good for what it is, I docked it a star because they didn't put a 100 meter scale on it. This would have been an easy add with a lot of value.

Book Review: Very useful but limited in its area of coverage
Summary: 4 Stars

While the description above is accurate in what is included, it omits that there is a large area to the west that's in the Park that is not shown on this map. The Trails Illustrated map of the GC includes this area so that if you want to explore anything west of 112 15'W, you'll need to get the TI map.

This is a lovely map for the limited area it shows. If the map included the missing area, the quality of this map would be my choice of the two. Another unique and nice feature is trail mileages included on many trails.

Use area designations are shown which assist in applying for a backcountry camping permit. I'd have preferred that the designations such as BJ9 and AK9 had color variations to indicate their respective Management Zones such as Primitive and Wild.

All in all this is an excellent map subject to above comments and provides a tremendous amount of information.

Book Review: Best map available
Summary: 4 Stars

This map is a great guide for hiking on the primitive trails or routes. The only problem I found with it is that it shows 6.0 miles from the North Rim to Cottonwood via the Old Bright Angel route, but it is actually 9 miles.

Book Review: A good general purpose planning map
Summary: 3 Stars

There are 2 1:40,000 maps which provide coverage equal to about 8 USGS Quads.

At this scale the details are small, but perhaps sufficient for an overview and general orientation, as the main trails are well marked.

The trail descriptions, lengths and overall vertical altitude gained/lost details are helpful for general planning of the treks and the general park info is useful.
