Book Reviews of GracelingBook Review: Great...If you can ignore the HUGE anti marriage elements Summary: 5 Stars
Graceling is a well written book by first time author Kristin ashore. She is remarkably talented in her telling of the story. The book definitely demands your attention and qualifies as un-put-downable. For the plot and writing, I give it the full five stars. And here, I add my caveats.
Unfortunately, the author does seem to take some of the precious space she is given between the covers to espouse an anti-marriage philosophy that may leave a mark on younger readers. If there were a solid cause for such a position, such as Katsa's witnessing terrible abusive marriage after terrible marriage, that would be one thing. No such events exist. For reasons never explained, the romance is developed beautifully with the decrying of marriage a central point. Kristin, WHY?????!
Other than that, the only irksome part of this story is the names. Po? Middluns, Sunder? And worst of all, Bitterblue? I still am having trouble with the names. And, at first, when Kristin is developing her locations, I nearly laughed out loud at the immaturity of the naming. If you can get past that, this is a fantastic novel with a fully developed cast of characters. I wish I didn't have to wait so long for a sequel and that it picked up immediately rather than six years in the future.
Book Review: Fantastically captivating, couldn't put it down. Summary: 5 Stars
After reading several books lately that I was not pleased with, it was incredibly refreshing to come upon this one. The plot was fantastic, and slightly terrifying at one point, considering the realization that there are people in this world who have immense power to do really horrible things to many innocent people.
I found Katsa to be an entirely motivational character. It's great to see a female character who can hold her own, and not become a ball of mush the moment a gorgeous man comes into her life. There was romance, yes, and I loved it because it wasn't sappy and cheesy, but quite interesting and believable. It's the type of romance you're not likely to see in many stories, and I'm surprised at how well the author pulled it off.
The action was well written and so were the characters, which is a big deal for me because I'm huge on character development. Very early on in the book I felt as if I could completely see these characters as real people, and I loved that.
I couldn't put it down, and I definitely didn't want it to end, even though it was nearing 500 pages in size. I look forward to reading any other books by this author, and I'll definitely be praising this one to anyone who is willing to listen.
Book Review: Enjoyment, captivating, a must read for all Stephenie Meyer's fans~ Summary: 5 Stars
Wow, what can I say about this book. I don't often take the time to write a review even though I have enjoyed so many books. I guess this one stands out because it wasn't recommended by Stephenie Meyer ---I found it on my own and fell in love with the story. I had just finished reading The Time Traveler's Wife so my mind was still in Henry and Clare's world and my expectation wasn't real high as this is her debut novel and the 1st 6 chapters, my mind was still on Henry & Clare. By the 7th chapter though, I left Henry & Clare to their world and moved on to Katsa's world and was hooked. From then on--you won't want to put this novel down. It is such a different and unique world and to watch Katsa change during the story and actually have her heart mended and fall in love and be loved is awesome. I love the possibility of Graces--yes you will have to read the story. The end only made me want more --a sequel and from what I found a pre-quel comes out in October followed by a sequel. I can not wait to see Bitterblue grow up and see how great of a Queen she will be. Even though it is 14 and older, I plan on letting my 10 year read it as the love scenes are left for your own imagination. I highly suggest to buy this book!
Book Review: Enchanting Tail Summary: 5 Stars
Lady Katsa is the main character of this book. She is born to a world where some people are born with special abilities. They can be recognized because they have different color eyes. A person that is graced can be a great swimmer, fighter, cook or can read minds. Katsa talent at first seems to be killing. Since her ability showed itself she became the lady killer of one of the kings of the seven kingdoms. People fear her grace so they keep a distance. On orders of the king she chops fingers or tortures in the most extravagant manner all men that defies the king. King thinks nothing of her, in his eyes she is simply a tool without a mind of her own. However, there is more to Katsa that meets the eye. Katsa meets Po who is also graced and because circumstances they join they forces in a common mission. The author wrote characters this book very well. They almost seem like people that are alive on the pages of the book. The action and progress of the book is nicely paces according to the circumstances and allows for better exportation of the personalities that make the book good. I look forward to read Fire a second book by Kristin Cashore that further explores this new world but beyond the seven kingdoms.
Book Review: fabulous! Summary: 5 Stars
I loved it! I loved it! I loved it!
A wonderful book full of adventure, family, friends, and romance! Katsa lives in a world where people can be born with special abilities. Recognized by their unusual two colored eyes, these Gracelings have special abilties that take about 10-13 years to reveal themselves. Katsa's showed up at age 10 when she accidently killed her cousin with one hit with her bare hand. Her uncle, the king, saw potential and immediately made her his "Lady Killer." From then on, she was the weapon he selfishly used to his own greedy ends. Up until 18, when Katsa put her foot down and said no more. Of course, at this time in her life she also made friends with another unique Graceling.
It was difficult putting this book down. I finished it in only two days and then was disappointed when it ended. I loved the characters, the strange world, and the good vs. bad plot, and I'm looking forward to reading more. I'm not sure if Cashore plans to continue this storyline since the evil was defeated and everything was solved in the end, but I hope she brings us back to this facinating world.
