Book Review: Grace After Midnight Will Knock Your Socks Off

I didn't know that Felicia Pearson was an actress or that she stars on HBO's The Wire. I didn't know a thing about her before I picked up her book. The book knocked my socks off! It's a compelling read. A young teenage girl tells her life story focusing on her time into drugs - not doing drugs, but dealing drugs. She describes her relationships while she was "on the street" and then in a woman's prison after she shot a woman in self-defense on those same streets. If you think this is your every day "life on the streets story," think again.
Felicia and her co-author, David Ritz, knock this one out of the park - the tone, the timing, the honesty - this book has it all. It's brilliance is in its brevity. The reader can easily put together anything missing in the narrative through the author's unbelievable descriptions and tone. You really feel like she is right there with you telling her story - bravely, honestly and unapologetically.
I've learned a few things from this story. Not the least of which is why folks deal drugs, why they can't get out of dealing drugs, and what a useless endless cycle it is for those who want to break out of the business. I also learned to respect Ms Pearson for her self-knowledge, her guts, and her ability to embrace a new life against all odds.
Do not miss this treat of a book. "A Million Little Pieces" eat your heart out out and this story is the truth. Holy Crap! Kudos to a fine young author and a fearless young lady.
Summary of Grace After Midnight: A Memoir
While Felicia is a brilliant actor in a truly chilling role, what's most remarkable about "Snoop" is what she has overcome in her life. Snoop was born a three-pound cross-eyed crack baby in East Baltimore. Those streets are among the toughest in the world, but Snoop was tougher. The runt of the ghetto showed an early aptitude for drug slinging and violence and thrived as a baby gangsta until she landed in Jessup state penitentiary after killing a woman in self-defense. There she rebelled violently against the system, and it was only through the cosmic intervention of her mentor, Uncle Loney, that she turned her life around. A couple of years ago, Snoop was discovered in a nightclub by one of The Wire's cast members and quickly recruited to be one of television's most frightening and intriguing villians.While the story of coming up from the hood has been told by Antwone Fisher and Chris Gardner, among others, Snoop's tale goes far deeper into The Life than any previous books. And like Mary Karr's story, Snoop's is a woman's story from a fresh point of view. She defied traditional conventions of gender and sexual preference on the hardest streets in America and she continues to do so in front of millions of viewers on TV.
