Book Reviews of Gotrek & Felix: The First Omnibus (Gotrek & Felix Novels)

Book Review: A Whirlwind Fantasy Adventure at a Bargin Price
Summary: 5 Stars

This collection of the first three books in the series of Gotrek and Felix covers Trollslayer, Skavenslayer and Daemonslayer. From the very first short-story this book had me hooked and didn't let me go until the very end of the book. I devoured the 763 pages in record time (for me at least, which was under one week). If you love fantasy adventures with great characters that you can identify with, I heartily recomment this book. I found it to be a great value over purchasing the books separately (though this does make it less portable if you enjoy reading while on-the-go).

I am not a player of the Warhammer games, so I did not quite know what to expect going into this book. I had originally picked it up to gain some background on the Warhammer universe for a job interview with the Warhammer Online development team. And even though I didn't get the game programming job, I was happy to have found this treasure.

The first two books are in a short story format which made me eager to read several in a single sitting. Looking at the table of contents I was leery that the final book, Daemonslayer, was not in the short story format as I had come to enjoy it so much. But the chapters flow so well in Daemonslayer that I didn't want the excitement to end. I'm eagerly looking forward to the second and third omnibi (omnibuses?) of Gotrek and Felix.

Book Review: A new fan to Gotrek & Felix...and you should be too!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read a lot of good sword-n-sorcery fantasy yarns and novels. I had read GIANTSLAYER (another William King G&F novel) prior to picking up the omnibus and the tales that started it all. I love fantasy because it takes me to places I have never been and if the characters and storytelling is right, is all THERE, I become one with the characters and setting...and THIS BOOK DOES THAT!. It's not just some hack-n-slash story though there is certainly a good amount of blood and gore, but you get to know Felix (as the bulk of the story is written through his eyes) and you care about him and even his grumpy ole companion Trollslayer, Gotrek. I am not going to give away any of the stories but even mashing the first three books together, there was a consistent flow, the action never slowed, things flowed. I couldn't put the book down. The ending was GREAT and kept me on the edge of my seat not sure of how the pair would come out...if they'd survive at all...even though I knew our heroes weren't going to die due to they have plenty of books beyond. King's writing is superb and I can't wait to read the rest of his G&F tales...and yes, even Nathan Long's contributions as he has taken the helm now. For a ten year old book, you can pick this up fairly cheap and it is well worth whatever money you pay.

Book Review: Excellent Omnibus
Summary: 5 Stars

I am very impressed with this Omnibus. The characters are interesting, the combat is described with just the right amount of detail, and the pacing of the stories is just as good.

The biggest criticism I can throw at the first Omnibus is that there isn't much character development in the first novel, as it is more a collection of short, intense stories than a full-fledged novel. However, if you stick with it you'll find that the characters themselves, as well as their supporting cast, grow steadily from the second novel and forward into the following novels.

I'd recommend this Omnibus to anyone who likes the fantasy genre and, particularly, anyone who likes well described combat and richly described settings. I suppose that if you prefer incredibly deep prose, you may be slightly turned off by the topical approach these novels take, but I can't imagine too many people feeling that way.

Book Review: Great books!
Summary: 5 Stars

Gotrek and Felix are a great series of books, based on the now infamous Warhammer characters. The first omnibus is a collection of the first three books in the series. Although the first book really isnt a book at all, but a collection of short stories based on Gotrek and Felix. William King is a master fantasy author and excels in setting the perfect tone in his books, they are dark, gritty and bloody... just like the Warhammer world!

Sadly while the first 7 books are penned by King, starting in the third Omnibus a new author named Long takes the series over and completly butchers King's characters. Gotrek becomes a whiney weak dwarf once Long took over *sigh*. But I would suggest anyone looking for Warhammer lore or high fantasy to pick up at least Omnibus one and two, the King books are excellent!

Book Review: Grim Fantasy
Summary: 5 Stars

If you ever fantasized to read something not so utterly over sweet and tacky high fantasy saga this definitely is worth exploring. When most of the adventuring is done hammered or hangover, people around are slain regular basis and all relieving death just won't come and take the protagonists out of their misery, one can quite quickly realize that there is something different in a storytelling and style of usually cliché filled field of fantasy. Even though this adventurous duo does experience typical development of fantasy novel characters becoming mighty heroes out of beating bags, the setting and style how the story is told is just compelling. Besides, this series just has the best antagonists in the history of fantasy literature. The Skaven (ratmen) are just so adorable, hail the Horned Rat!
