Book Review: Exciting, terrifying and adventurous all rolled into one
Summary: 5 Stars
Synopsis: Tommy Frazer just moved to Bell Valley with his dad and his new mom. Being a new student at Bell Valley Middle School, Tommy is eager to make friends, so he volunteers to be in the Dance Decorations Committee to decorate the school gym. At the committee, he befriends two students, Ben Jackson and Thalia Halpert-Rodis. They run out of paint while painting the banner, and Tommy decides to go to the art room in the third floor to get extra supplies of paint cans. He decides to take a short cut, and finds himself lost in a strange corridor. There, he starts hearing whispers and giggles around him, even though there is no one around. Eventually, he finds his way back and forgets what happened.
Later, on the day of the dance, Greta (one of the bullies of the school) rips the banner as a gag. Tommy and Ben decide to go to the art room to find supplies for fixing the banner. Tommy decides to use the short cut he took before, but this time, they reach a dead end wall that is boarded up. However, the wall breaks down easily, and the two friends find an elevator at the end of the dark corridor. Thinking that it would get them faster to the third floor, Tommy and Ben enter the elevator. What they don't realize is that the elevator would be taking them to another world, one which they might not escape from.
Review: I thought this was a terrific book to read. I kept wondering what would happen next, once Tommy and Ben entered the elevator. All the pieces of the story fit nicely, and the ending has a great twist to it. Some parts of the book were really eerie, like when the kids go outside , start drinking cups of black liquid, and then start spitting it on each other.
My only recommendation on how this book could have been perfect was if Stine had given a background of Mr. Chameleon, and the reason why he was so evil, since he was the cause of the school being haunted. I also thought Greta's character was unnecessary, because she didn't do anything to the story's progress.
Overall, this is definitely one of the more memorable Goosebumps books that I had the pleasure of reading, and wouldn't mind re-reading it in the future.
