Goose Chase, written by Patrice Kindl is a fantasy book about a young girl and her Geese. Alexandria Aurora Fortunato is poor but happy until Alexandria's mother dies. Then another bad thing happens. An old crone comes up to her as she is minding her Geese, and gives her magical gifts. Although they were supposed to be a blessing, Alexandria hates it because she is stuck up in a tower until she chooses between the simpleminded Prince of Dorloo and King Carlos the Cruel of Gilboa for her husband. She wants neither, and with the help of her Geese she escapes. She is in store for more adventures however. Eventually, she seems to be so close to freedom. Then King Carlos captures her to become his bride. Can she escape from his evil clutches?
There are several main characters in Goose Chase. Alexandria, of course, who just wants to go back to the life she and her mother led before the old crone gave her the "wonderful" gifts. She is also the narrator. Another main character, or in this case set of characters are her Geese, who have plans of their own for her and themselves and will bite anyone who is foolish get in their way. Her two would-be-husbands are also main characters. The Prince of Dorloo is exceedingly well meaning but exceedingly dimwitted. The evil and mean King Carlos wants Alexandria for her magical gifts. The final main character is the old crone, who started all this for purposes of her own.
I would recommend this book for several reasons. It has a really good plot, with lots of twists, especially at the end. The characters are realistic, at least as far as they can be in a fantasy book. There is a " and they lived happily ever after" ending. It is a terrific page turner, and you are drawn into it like a whirlpool. The way it was written was very light and humorous. Anyone who likes adventure books of any type would like Goose Chase! On a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 9.7. I just wish it was longer!
Summary of Goose ChaseIt starts when Alexandria, a poor, plain goose girl, offers her own bread and water to a hungry old woman-who just happens to be a witch in disguise. Poof! Alexandria is suddenly heartstoppingly beautiful. Her hair rains down gold dust, and the tears she sheds turn to diamonds. Soon a prince and a king are fighting for her hand, and they've locked her in a tower to keep her "safe." How Alexandria wishes she was a goose girl again! Clearly the only thing to do is escape-which is when her problems really begin! Patrice Kindl's inimitable voice and craft make this take on the classic fairy tale extraordinary-and extraordinarily hilarious.
"A delightful, witty fairy-tale spoof.. . . Kindl's humor, the strong characterizations, and vibrant action give the story wings." (Booklist, starred review)
