"In the great green room, there was a telephone and a red balloon, and a picture of the cow jumping over the moon..." As I read this soothing classic to my littlest one, I hear echoes of my own mother's voice reading the same bedtime story to me (the copyright says 1947). I have passed on the tradition of letting my toddler stall for bedtime by bidding goodnight to everything around her and, of course, I make my voice fade into a whisper when I read the last lines: "Goodnight stars. Goodnight air. Goodnight noises everywhere."
