Book Reviews of God Save the Sweet Potato QueensBook Review: I Wanna Be A Wannabe Summary: 4 Stars
What happens when a group of women all named Tammy get together with their fearless ringleader, Jill, and strut down the road in the middle of Jackson, Mississippi wearing green sequined dresses and pink majorette boots during the annual St. Patrick's Day parade? Oh, I'd say a mild case of hysteria at best....They're called The Sweet Potato Queens and every one wants to be one. Founder of the Queens and author of this book, Jill Conner Browne has given us much insight into the wacky world of Sweet Potato-ness, all while making the rest of us mortals insanely jealous that we didn't think of it first. Read on as Jill gives us advice on dating, marriage, divorce, children, men and acting like a lady -- Sweet Potato style. While not for the tame at heart, one who enjoys bawdy and rated-R humor will most likely devour this book. God Save the Potato Queens is an excellent follow-up to the pandemonium that is The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love. I recommend that you read them in order since the first book's subjects are referred to in the second book, and Jill is not going to review them for you just to save you 13 bucks! An excellent addition to the libraries of Southern fiction fans as well as readers who agree Fritos and margaritas is the fifth major food group. Eat up!
Book Review: Not trying to be another "Ya-Ya" Book Summary: 4 Stars
Jill Conner Browne's "God Save the Sweet Potato Queens" continues to dispense her sassy yet sweet advice on live, life, men, marriage and being prepared. Readers were introduced to Jill and her bevy of Tammys in "The Sweet Potato Queens Book of Love," and the fun continues here. New subjects added in the sequel include "revirgination", and "How to be a Girl".In response to the review which negatively compare this book to "The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood", I don't believe it's fair at all to compare the two books. This book is not fiction at all, rather, it is a cross between humor and a handbook. The anecdotes in this book are based on real life, with only a teensy bit of exaggeration. I laughed on almost every page of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the story about the "rubber chicken and schnozzes" theme wedding. Read this book, I dare you not to laugh too! Colorado ...
Book Review: The Queens Still Reign! Summary: 4 Stars
After reading the Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love last year, I thought it was the cat's meow. When I found out the second book was coming out, I was first in line! I didn't think it would be possible for Jill Conner Browne to do it, but God Save the Sweet Potato Queens is just as well-written and witty as her first novel. I found myself chuckling a lot and have passed the book on to a friend to read. Throughout the book (when you can stop yourself from giggling at the wacky anecdotes concerning all the 'Tammys') there are interesting tips, new sweet potato queens' slang terms, and of course fabulous recipes! If you liked the first book, you'll love this one, too. If you haven't read either of them, you're missing out bless your heart....
Book Review: Self-empowering! Summary: 4 Stars
This rating should be 4.5 stars - only .5 star lower than the first book. Reason being the many references to and clarifications of Browne's first book, "The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love." This second book, however, is a wonderful continuation of the SPQs' epics and antics.Given the handbook-like advice of Jill Connor Browne and her cohorts the "Tammys", any red-blooded American woman will feel self-empowered and independent. Browne's writing style is comedic and highly entertaining, and causes the reader to laugh out loud... often. Beware, husbands watching sports nearby may feel threatened by her truths! I should mention that this is humor only a woman will understand and appreciate. Now I am anxiously awaiting book #3!
Book Review: Laughed myself silly! Summary: 4 Stars
I picked up this book without having read the first one and thought it was a total hoot. Laughed so hard tears ran down my face. I'm not even remotely Southern so I suppose it's a tribute to my white trash upbringing that I totally identified with the adventures of Jill and the rest of the Tammys. I have to agree, though, that there are way too many references to the first book and some of the humor might be considered a tad racy. That aside, however, I do recommend buying the book as there are many amusing stories to keep you entertained. I definitely intend to pick up the first book as well.
