Book Reviews of God Emperor of Dune (Dune Chronicles, Book 4)

Book Review: a different approach from the other books in the series
Summary: 5 Stars

If you have come this far in the series or with any of Frank Herbert's other books, you know he is a good if not excellent writer. The reviews are helpful up to a certain point, but we all have our own feelings and expectations of what we want from his books. With that said-

Action, action, action! Please, as if we don't get enough action in popular books, movies and in our day to day lives. I won't go into the plot since many other reviews covered it pretty well. But this book has a different kind of action, I couldn't turn my mind or my emotions off after I read the book. I ached after. Writing is an art and art is supposed to make us feel.

I can see how some would say the ending was weak, I pretty much guessed the ending, no surprises there. But its part of the story. Don't let comparing this book with the others cloud over the experience of reading the book, just read it and take it for what it is.

Book Review: Authorial Intent?
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, don't boo me into oblivion here, but...I found this book to be HYSTERICAL. An inappropriate reaction? Perhaps, but there you are. As a young female, I was amused by how much of a guy's book this was. I mean, really, there isn't a lot of plot here, but there is a lot of fighting. For the most part, it's the Amazon legion of women all lusting after the 50th (thereabouts) incarnation of Duncan Idaho, and lesbians, and Leto angsting about being a 3,000 year old virgin worm whose girlfriend is attracted to the hunk that Leto has such as odd fixation with.

Dune is High School!

But seriously, folks, all of you who enjoyed the first Dune Trilogy...you won't be disappointed here. God Emperor shows the decline and fall of what could have been a great empire, and is, surprisingly (given the giant worm factor here) very human and emotional. The characters are vivid, and the gloomy settings make for a great "brooding" book.

Book Review: Frank Herbert's Masterwork
Summary: 5 Stars

YOU problably have read the three previous books of the Dune cronicles and wonder should I continue. Well the answer is yes. Herbert is the king of creating totally enrapuring characters, but with the exception of Paul Atreids there is no match for Leto II. This book is about the ultimate tyrant with the ultimate gift an incredible life span the knowledge of all his andestors and an army of zealots. I am not a huge Sci- fi fan but I am very loyal to the work of Frank Herbert. Who creates plots with in plots with in plots. Herbert shows what happens when mortals worship other mortals with godlike conviction this is worth reading alone.

If you didn't like DUNE then stop here and forget it. But I am guessing that you didn't read three books without liking them. This is Herberts Pinnicle DUNE, DUNE MESSIAH, and CHILDREN OF DUNE were the preface to this book. Only Herbert could stretch the imagination this far.

Book Review: GED is the cornerstone of the Dune series - A Must Read
Summary: 5 Stars

Most people read Dune then start on the series and end up disappointed. It happens. It happend to me also. But READ ON!!! Sadly, they miss the fact that this fourth book is the center of the Dune universe. <Previous books plot spoiler next> Leto II is the true Super Being and becomes what his "premature" father refused. He also displays the true meaning of leadership, self sacrifice, and love. It takes a couple readings to have it all sink in, especially if the reader bonded strongly with Paul, but there is a reason why the son must kill(replace) his father. Without a doubt, this book is the reason why the first 3 exist. The other two books after this talk about the effects. This is an absolute must read, or read again, if you just didn't "get it" the first time. Personally, its required reading for all my students.

Book Review: Light on Sci Fi - Heavy on thought
Summary: 5 Stars

My first reading of God Emperor of Dune was a bit of a chore. However, I did find myself enjoying the story of what had become of the Atreides dynasty. Here I am years later reading the book for the fifth time and I still find nuances never before seen. Quite possibly one of my favorites in the saga.

God Emperor of Dune does not focus much at all with extravagant new technology (though you can find some of it here and there) nor does it reveal any new planets or exciting battles. This book tells the story of the inner workings of the God Emperor's religion, palace intreague, a rebellion, and the continuing story of Duncan Idaho and how he fits in with the fabric of the universe that Leto II has created for himself.

Science fiction at its best, even though there is not much science at all.
