Book Reviews of Giraffes Can't Dance

Book Review: An awkward giraffe finds inspiration
Summary: 5 Stars

This story is a good one for anyone building a collection on a "diversity" theme - or who just has preschool age kids in the house! This was given to us as a gift when my twins were infants so they have heard it since a young age. They readily accepted the "magic" of a talking giraffe and menagerie of jungle animals. When awkward, clumsy Gerald the Giraffe listens to the sounds of nature, he learns to dance in his own way, and ends up gaining newfound respect. A gentle and encouraging story with excellent drawings. Other than teasing, nothing controversial or disturbing.

Book Review: Excellent book!
Summary: 5 Stars

An absolutely wonderful little book! Gerald is a giraffe who watches the other animals dance and believes that he can't...until a smart little cricket tells him that sometimes when you're different "you just need a different song." There are so many lessons gently packed into this story...be true to yourself, believe in yourself, be kind to those who are different, explore new possibilities...and on and on.

The illustrations and beautiful, bright and detailed, and the rhythm of the story itself is very well done.

Highly, highly recommended

Book Review: Continues to be a family favorite!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my nephew and neices favorite book for Aunt Theresa to read when they were little. But even as they grew older, they still loved to read it themselves. I can't think of a better message to share than "believe in yourself, no matter what. And always dance!" I asked the kids, now 7, 10 and 12, if I could give the book to their new cousin. They considered it and decided that we should buy him his own. Giraffes Can't Dance was one of only a handful of books they took with them during a recent move to their new house and they didn't want to part with it. :)

Book Review: Great Message for all ages
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this book! My mentor read it to her 8th grade class before they went off to high school and i bought it as a parting gift for a friend of mine who just went to college. It has a wonderful message of "dancing to you own beat" or just being yourself, no matter what people think. Seeing that i just had my first child, i will definitely be buying him this book and i will read it to him, even if he is only 3 months old because i don't think anyone is too young to be taught that they deserve individuality.

Book Review: I read this book to my disabled child (4 years old)
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful book about a Gerald, a giraffe who attempts to dance at the yearly jungle dance, but shies away from the stage when other animals laugh at him. This book express beautifully how it feels to be different - 'Gerald had never felt so sad and so alone' - and ends on a very positive note: 'Sometimes when you're different, you just need a different song' and 'we all can dance, when we find music that we love.' It was a perfect book to help my child with his feelings towards his weakness.
