Book Reviews of Giraffes Can't DanceBook Review: There is something special in all of us Summary: 5 Stars
This book is wonderful. It demonstrates, in its storyline and text, that there isn't always just one right way to do something. In other words, we may all have a unique approach. In this case Gerald thinks he's a bad dancer. His negative perception is reinforced by the other jungle animals whom Gerald thinks dances perfectly. The other animals tease Gerald. He doesn't seem to "fit in" with the crowd. Gerald's problem is, he is trying to dance their way. He needs to find his own style. Good and bad examples abound in real life, and with our guidance they all provide rich learning experiences for our children. Given that, with your guidance, this book imparts to children a) There is often more than one way to do something, b) courage and perseverance pay off, and c) teasing hurts. Not bad for 29 pages of delightful rhyming text and colorful illustrations.
Book Review: Woonderful story that appeals to all ages Summary: 5 Stars
As a school library media specialist, I have reviewed many many children's books. This is among my favorites for younger children. The best books for kids appeal to adults as well, and this one certainly does. I can read the simple rhyming story straight through with a group of kids with a limited amount of time, or I can take time to study and discuss the pictures and the story with my 3 year old granddaughter. The story is told through a simple rhyme with colorful pictures that are integral to the text. The message is clear without being pedantic. I think this would make a great book to use in a movement type of class as well (perhaps yoga for kids??) but the book stands on its own merit without any embellishment.
Book Review: GERALD GETS HIS GROOVE ON Summary: 5 Stars
My 3 year daughter received this book as a birthday gift. Almost a year later, it is still her favorite (and mine as well!). The story is cute, funny and endearing. There is also some good lessons taught. Overall, a real feel good story. And the illustrations are just beautiful.
We have since given this as a gift to at least 10 children. And all the parents have made a special note of how exceptional the book is. Never has such a simple gift received such fanfare.
Updated July 2009: Almost three years later, this book is still a favorite. My now 6 year old ocassionally likes to hear it, and my 3 yo loves it. I'm still giving it as a gift for the 3 - 4 year old set.
Book Review: Oh, how we love this book!! Summary: 5 Stars
A rare find, this book isn't just vibrantly illustrated, but the story is awesome as well! The reviewers that have rated this five stars have already summed the book up perfectly! The only thing I can add is my experience when quite discriminating friends, researchers and teachers, have been over and read the book to their children. It was immediately purchased for their own child and, I was informed, has become a staple in gifting occasions.
We have had the book for 4 years and still haven't tired of it! We, includes our 7 yr, 5yr and 18 mo old children. It is a favorite and a must-have to those of you looking for the BEST to add to your collection.
Book Review: The sweetest story ever! Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my top 5 favorite picture books! The story itself -about Gerald, a giraffe who can't dance and gets teased by the other animals but finds his own rhythm with the help of a cricket and then wow's the other animals with his dancing - is very endearing and easy for children to follow, all the while teaching a subtle lesson. What I especially love are the beautiful illustrations and wonderful rhyme and rhythm. The book is an absolute joy to read and look at. We never get sick of reading it. My husband thinks it's the best children's book ever, which is a big deal since he thinks most children's books are stupid or way too corny!
