Book Reviews of Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story

Book Review: The Stuff Heroes Are Made Of.
Summary: 5 Stars

When you think of a hero, what comes to mind? Bruce Willis in a Die Hard movie? Rocky, perhaps? After reading Gifted Hands, there was no doubt in my mind that Ben Carson is a hero.

The most amazing thing is, that upon reading this book, you will realize that he does not regard himself as such. He humbly acknowledges that he is a child of God and that he is out to put out his best efforts in this world. Ben is a gentle giant - he is a highly capable individual with the ability to save lives - and although he is a person that merits much respect, he acknowledges the value of every human as just that: a human. In other words, he considers himself an equal with someone who, for example, sells cotton candy on the beach for a living.

I rated the books five stars because it is so inspirational. Through his well told story- that of a economically handicapped youth in a segregated society who becomes one of the world's best neurosurgeons - he shows us that there are no excuses in life. We all have obstacles - some small, some mammoth - but we can all pull strength from ourselves and God to make something great of ourselves. His faith and virtues have taken quite far in his life - and it has been accomplished by giving his best efforts each day.

Highly recommended reading for everyone - especially anyone facing hard times that make them feel like they cannot be their best - the book engagingly gives us very practical advice.

Book Review: A life-changing story
Summary: 5 Stars

One wouldn't expect someone who came from a poor, single-parent home, and with failing grades in school, to eventually become one of the greatest neurosurgeons in history. Gifted Hands, written by Ben Carson with Cecil Murphey, chronicles that man's journey, the journey of Ben Carson. Throughout the book, his captivating style and amazing story make his determination to be the best contagious.

What stands out most is how he tells his story. He begins by telling narrative of what was happening and what he was thinking, and then switches to dialogue at key moments to allow us to imagine these incidents and characters as if we were really there. This approach to storytelling gives the book an easy-to-read quality that is hard to resist. It is his positive outlook on life, an "I can do anything I set my mind to" attitude, however, that makes his book truly irresistible. To hear the odds he was up against, the determination he had to conquer them, and the vast level of success he achieved inspires one to always do his best in everything, too.

The book Gifted Hands proves that Ben Carson is not only gifted with his hands. He is gifted with his words too. This book captures Ben Carson's humble spirit and attitude as he accomplishes feats no man thought possible, yet never considers himself any more than an ordinary man who uses what he has for God's glory. I highly recommend this book.

Book Review: AN UNSUNG HERO OF THE WORLD, THAT NEEDS TO BE MORE RECOGNIZE!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

All I have to say is that, I have ultimate respect for this great man. He is definitely a true superior being in every sense of the WORD!!!! We need more true role models, like Mr. Carson to be more displayed, showcase in the media more often.

This younger black generation today, (white, latino, asian as well), needs to see more of this. I mean, a real talented, intelligent, well educated, articulate, and caring black men, like Mr. Carson who has contribute so much, into making peoples lives and society better.

I'm a very strong advocate, of showing more postive images of us in the media as African American people. That's why the "Bling! Bling!" B.S. that some of these pathitic, worthless, mindless black (brotha's and sista's) rappers and athletes, like to negatively displayed ad nauseam, needs to STOP! And Mr. Carson's story needs to be read, seen and told 24/7.

Also, I'm tired of hearing unimportant recycle stories, about none interesting, not even talented or cute (both male and female) over hype, overrated caucasian movie stars, people not worthy of my valuble time, coming from dumbing the masses, superficial Tinsale Town (Hollywood).

I will point this out again for the last time: BEN CARSON IS MORE IMPORTANT AND RELEVANT TO OUR LIVES!!!

Book Review: What Happens When an Unstoppable Force Meets an Immovable Object?
Summary: 5 Stars

Dr Carson didn't invent siamese-twin separation, but nobody had his success rate until he started. He's accomplished what was once thought to be a foolish endeavor, due to the extreme dangers involved. But through Dr Carson's hands, science has triumphed over one of life's accidents.
In some ways, Carson's life has been about how science takes humans over insurmountable obstacles. His father left the family after his "double life" was revealed (I thought he was gay, but it turns out he had another woman AND children by her). But Carson's mother is smart; she never badmouths their father, and that alone keeps them on a straight path, because children mimic their parents behavior. Then their mother, who never finished elementary school, demands they read a book a week. She may not have an education, but she's smart enough to know that reading builds the mind, just like weight lifting builds the muscles.

Coming from a Jewish background, I tend to take doctors for granted (especially after dealing with a lot of third-rate health insurance physicians). What I can't take for granted is a doctor who is also a scientist and explorer of the human body, always looking for ways to cheat death or repair deficits left by nature.

Book Review: All About Being Motivated
Summary: 5 Stars

From a young hothead, making an unsuccessful attempt at stabbing a friend, to one of America's leading Pediatric Neurosurgeons. Shows just how much can be achieved when our minds are put to use, and we stop letting others set our limitations. Even when it angers the very school personnel that should be giving their support, that we can achieve as much as their very own children, and even higher at times. For this is some of the very racial prejudice that Ben Carson had to endure, after attaining the highest academic level of anyone else from his Jr. High School years and on. What should have been congratulations from his school's leadership, was looked upon as lack of effort for the other mostly white student body, that they would let an African-American child out achieve them. How stereotypes are being continually forced to fall.

Mr. Carson is one of many examples of African-Americans not only being able to excell in sports and entertainment, but scholastically as well. And some still have trouble accepting that even in the 21st century. Nowhere other than Johns-Hopkins was his goal, and he has more than attained it as its head of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Thank you Mr. Carson for inspiring us all.
