Book Reviews of Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story

Book Review: A Surgeon's Rise in the Medical Profession
Summary: 5 Stars

The book documents the early life and rise to medical stardom
of Dr. Benjamin Carson- a now famous neurosurgeon. The volume
begins with the childhood experiences and upbringing of Ben
and his brother Curtis. Ben tended to cram his studying at
the last minute. Nevertheless, he did well in grammar school.
Later, he would struggle in a marathon study session to
achieve a 97 in chemistry.

Ben attended Yale University and proceeded to the
University of Michigan to study medicine. He skipped a
General Surgery rotation to go straight to a Neuroscience
residency at Johns Hopkins University.
The volume contains a series of memorable pictures depicting
Dr. Carson MD as a neurosurgeon.

The presentation describes some very complicated surgical
procedures; such as, the hemispherectomy on the
patient Miranda. The procedure was lengthy and complicated
in this particular case because a part of the brain matter
had to be extracted. Ultimately, the procedure was successful
due to the skillful surgical manipulations of Dr. Carson
and a concept known as plasticity. The concept deals with
the ability of the brain to attain a similar mathematical
dilation or shape despite pressure deformation during surgery.
The patient was speaking shortly thereafter.

Brain diagnostics and surgery can be a complicated
undertaking due to a number of factors including the lengthy
time in surgery and extensive bleeding. Diseases of the brain
can have very technical distinctions; such as, cerebellar atrophy
and Marchiafava's disease. The presentation documents just how
far brain surgery has come through advances in the
art of surgery. The book makes a very interesting read for a
wide constituency of the general public and especially
medical practitioners.

Book Review: This book is FANTASTIC on so many different levels.
Summary: 5 Stars

This teaches professionalism and how to conduct yourself in a professional way. It talks about the importance of being self-taught, which I am starting to get myself into also. We get continuous reinforcement from Dr Carson's mother. Dr Carson talks about how to continuously improve at being a student and that attitude evolved into standards of excellence.. learning from the process, this is something important which alot of others won't share. I think we have stereotypes of what a smart person should be exactly even in terms of personality. There were alot of insights into medicine, some doctors who would give an 'automatic no', I wouldn't want to be anywhere near, medicine is about trust. I loved the photos that show GOD in Dr Carson's life, powerful images. I enjoyed the appreciation for people who helped Dr Carson along the way to get summer jobs, words remembered and treasured, "there's always a job for you here." I like how Dr Carson values everyone on his team.

I got 1100 on the SAT but I read things on other levels, the test is only as good as it is valid. Maybe a study guide would help out on some of the trickier SAT math problems which you really don't encounter anywhere else except on the SAT test, the expensive prep courses aren't really necessary for everyone. Do some of the 'smart people' talking about the test pretend they didn't pay $1000 for Kaplan or Princeton, give me a break. That's not my defition of a smart person, smart people talk about ideas. I don't think most doctors raised in the ghetto would give up on someone, like the ones described with the 'god complex'.

I enjoyed reading about how the procedures were described. I am going to write a thank you letter to Dr Carson because my life was changed by reading important lessons in Gifted Hands. I think I just had an idea I want to ask Dr Carson about in neuroscience. Thank you!

Book Review: A Truly Inspirational Story
Summary: 5 Stars

Once I started reading Gifted Hands, I had it finished within the next 3 days. It is an excellent book because something about it always keeps the reader anxious to find out what is going to happen next. Ben Carson and his brother, Curtis, grew up as poor black kids in the not-so-good area of Detroit. Their father had walked out on them when they were little; therefore, they were raised solely by their mother. Ben had many challenges in his childhood including his slower learning ability, his temper, his lack of self-control, and the racial prejudice shown towards him. When he realized his problems, he decided to change, and he did. He straightened up his life and with the help of prayer and hard work, he eventually became a great student, as well as a life-saving neurosurgeon. He is known to be the first person to successfully separate Siamese twins that were joined at the head, in which both of the boys survived. This was a truly amazing accomplishment and was only one of the major successes Ben Carson has achieved in his career. This is an inspiring story that shows no matter how bad-off you are, if you try, you can always grow to make something great out of your life. Today, Carson is still the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He has been awarded 24 honorary degrees and dozens of national citations of merit and is known for saving innumerable lives and being a wonderful role model for people of any age. This book has truly made an impact on my life-it has shown me to never give up, even when all odds are against me. Also, that everyone has their own purpose to fulfill, and with determination, faith in God, and hard work anyone can achieve a more than successful life.

Book Review: Gifted Hands: An autobiography by Ben Carson
Summary: 5 Stars

Gifted Hands, the inspiring transformation of Ben Carson, was a great autobiography! As he faced terrible times during his rough childhood years, he still managed to become successful.

Ben Carson was a troublesome juvenile growing up in a terrible neighborhood. He did not excel in school and therefore battled an anger problem which almost caused his best friend's life. His lack of self-control always led him into a rage that would hurt others as well as himself both physically and emotionally. Carson later realized that he had a serious problem and wanted to change. He decided to transform from a immature angry boy into an unique man that impacts other peoples lives.

This novel revealed an interesting zeal of success and motivation that inspires readers of all ages. It led to having hope, never giving up, and striving to become the individual that God wants you to become.

Dr. Carson suceeded and now is a brain seargeant at Johns Hopkins Hospitol in Baltimore, Maryland. One of the most inspiring surgeries he ever performed was on separating simese-twins who were joined at the head. Dr. Carson also speaks to young men and women to encourage them to turn their lives around to make something of themselves. After this breathtaking autobiography, Carson remains one of the most highly respected and intriguing African-Americans in the history of America. I actually had the opportunity to meet Dr. Carson at Johns Hopkins one day while visiting my father when he was being hospitalized there. After that short time talking with him, I could already begin to admire him. This book,Gifted Hands will change any readers life for the better.

Book Review: Wow, I don't believe it!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a doctor, Ben Carson's true story and novel. It is his autobiography and non-fiction novel. This book `gifted hands' inspired me and changed my life and might affect in your life or change you. His desire and devoted passion in his life for patients in the book were so impressive to me. Some parts of the book make me not believe the story because those look like just challenge. His some surgeries as a surgeon gave some dying patients another chance to survive even though those surgeries looked impossible to be succeeded so that this incredible story encouraged me to try doing something impossible. Also his self-confidence in all ways of his life stimulates me to make one more step forward in your life if you learn his self-confidence like in his intern days of the hospital through the book after reading it. As I refer about the book, there are a lot of indirect teachings in the book that you need to learn for your better life even though it is a just novel. That is why I want you to read it and recommend you to read it. Especially this book shows the guide for education between mothers and children. His mother teaches and shows him how to control his bad urge and habit like reading a lot instead of watching TV too much so that her teaching makes him succeed in his life, and then he shows us how he succeeds with his self-control. His mother's stimulation like self-control is the important crystal for his great success. I think this story shows the important role of a mother for education of her children's success. Don't hesitate reading this book. This book will be the lighthouse and the fresh air in your life.
