Book Reviews of Ghost Road BluesBook Review: Winner by knockout! Summary: 5 Stars
Icons of horror fiction, make room on the couch for Maberry! Feed him some sconces and tea. Add rum. For in Ghost Road Blues we are gifted with entertainment so lively we're up at night reading way more than we intended to in one sitting, and we need to thank (or curse) Maberry for that.
Maberry's debut novel comes after he's published nonfiction for 20-some-odd years and served the martial arts and personal protection community as a title holder and instructor. No wonder he's primed for action-adventure in the supernatural realm.
As a tickler of words myself, let me tell you it's tough getting all the sought-for elements in storytelling down right. Maberry does it with such aplomb you think you've stumbled into a real, albeit alternate, universe in which the scary parts make you plead for the slow-down of the world's highest roller coaster. Like a camp counselor with a sadistic streak, Maberry sucks us into his dark tale in the Pennsylvania Pine Deep with no let-up, though the forest behind is full of unnerving sounds and the brisk air chills to the bone.
Building believable characters is the art that makes it work. Doing it within several storylines requires the careful timing of a professional dancer escorting his partner through a phantasmagoria of motions. He's also the actor who wrenches from you emotions you were not prepared to acknowledge. Magicians come to mind.
Here, a word about poetry in above-par fiction. Poetry is the inspired placement of words designed to evoke feeling and provoke thought. In lines like the following, pulled from the teaser at the back of GRB, this kind of poetry serves to usher us into an unusual experience: "Pumpkin growers come like headsmen to gather the gourds for the carvers' knives." You'll find lines like that throughout Ghost Road Blues.
Another reviewer on these Amazon pages mentioned a suspicion that Maberry was actively soliciting reviews; not a bad thing, the reviewer says, but uncomfortable to suppose. My first thought was, Well, bless him even if so, unless he's held a gun to their heads! If he knows enough folks who actually read books, and enough who'll take the time to write a review, then he must hold some powerful personal persuasiveness even in his silence. I met the author once, and I can testify to an energy, a gregariousness, and a love of his craft that's infectious. He did not mention to me that after our meeting he'd go out and read one of my books and then post a review on Amazon. But the fact that he took the time to do so is a courtesy and a generosity that floors me, considering my work has been out of print awhile and so who could care less? With the energy Jonathan Maberry devotes to the craft and an obvious love of sharing what he knows via workshops and panels and classes, he deserves to rope in readers any way he can. And if he cares enough to want to do a good job for his publisher by applying every method he can dream up to the marketing of his book, he's earned the reviews and the readership.
Maberry's nonfiction shows how to kick your opponent silly. Maberry's fiction kicks his allies, his appreciative readers, giddy. If the next installment in the planned trilogy is half as good as Ghost Road Blues, be prepared to stand in a long line at a Maberry signing event.
Summary of Ghost Road Blues Winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel From a new master of horror comes an apocalyptic showdown between the residents of a secluded, rural town and the deadly evil that confronts them wherever they turn . . . Evil Doesn't Die The cozy little town of Pine Deep buried the horrors of its past a long time ago. Thirty years have gone by since the darkness descended and the Black Harvest began, a time when a serial killer sheared a bloody swath through the quiet Pennsylvania village. The evil that once coursed through Pine Deep has been replaced by cheerful tourists getting ready to enjoy the country's largest Halloween celebration in what is now called "The Spookiest Town in America." It Just Grows Stronger But then--a month before Halloween--it begins. Unspeakably desecrated bodies. Inexplicable insanity. And an ancient evil walking the streets, drawing in those who would fall to their own demons and seeking to shred the very soul of this rapidly fracturing community. Yes, the residents of Pine Deep have drawn together and faced a killer before. But this time, evil has many faces--and the lust and will to rule the earth. This struggle will be epic.
