Book Reviews of Getting Into Medical School (Barron's Getting Into Medical School)Book Review: Has it's Pros, Cons Summary: 3 Stars
Pros: Dr. Brown offers hope for the nontraditional student, and guidance for the student early in his or her college career. Although much of the information is available free online, it condenses it all to one handy book. This is a reasonably good blueprint for getting in.
Cons: Dr. Brown avoids using definitive language. I don't believe Dr. Brown ever says "You have a 3.2 and a 29 MCAT....you're not getting in, sorry" however, that's very much the truth. I know he doesn't wanna shoot down anyone's hopes, or provide false hope, but he is too wishy washy. He doesn't mention much about extracurriculars that set an applicant apart from the bunch. From what I understand, EMT experience is a HUGE plus in getting in. Why wasn't that mentioned?
Next, Dr. Brown gears this too much toward the "special cases" and college freshmen. I was a college junior when I changed my major from Pre-Chiropractic Biology to Pre-Med Biology and bought this book. Much of the advice was not going to help me.
Dr. Brown also doesn't warn the reader much about the actual profession. It's a tough job!
Finally, Dr. Brown dedicates a sentence and limited appendix space toward Osteopathy schools. It seems Dr. Brown is not thrilled by their existence. He is far too biased toward the "MD" title, when a "DO" title is just as good (or arguably better). Dr. Brown also compares Caribbean schools to the old early 20th century unregulated schools.
In reality, I would give him 2.5 stars, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Summary of Getting Into Medical School (Barron's Getting Into Medical School)Getting into medical school is a demanding process, with less than half of all medical school candidates gaining admission. The updated 10th edition of this reliable guide advises prospective medical students on the undergraduate courses they should take, then takes them step-by-step through the process of taking the required Medical College Admission Test, applying to medical school, getting past the personal interview, and doing well as a medical student. This edition also offers new information on getting into osteopathic schools, and presents an updated list of websites that provide valuable information to medical school candidates. There are plenty of doctors' reference books on diseases and drugs, but few to assist the would-be doctor attain that status. And there's an overwhelming blizzard of issues to face. Considering the effort that goes into passing organic chemistry, it's not a major time commitment to spend a few hours learning how to choose a college, survive premed, take the MCAT, and apply successfully to med school. And as a bonus, there's an appendix of summer programs for premeds, and a full directory of American medical schools (with grade point averages, enrollment, costs, and application information) as well.
