My sister recommended these to us a couple years ago when my oldest daughter was around 5 years old. She loved them and has done great with them. She is now in the "Explode the Code" books and we'll continue with them. We've tried Hooked on Phonics, and there are things we like about them, but in the end, these books seem to be preferred.
I just bought these again for my son, who is 3 yrs 4 months old. He is advanced in his speech and language development and really wants to be involved in doing books like his sister. I've tried doing Pre-K Hooked on Phonics with him, but it's too boring (all it has him do is color a letter a day and then play a very simple game on the computer, which he's done for a year now and is very bored by it).
Normally I'm a big believer on introducing things later than too early, but he seems really interested. What I like about these books, and what I think will be good for him, is that these books offer a variety of activities. They have them trace a line through a very basic maze, choose the picture that isn't the same as the others, circle all the similar letters, trace the letter, then write the letter on their own. It might be too advanced for my son at this age (they should arrive in the mail soon, and I'll update if it works well for him), but we LOVE them for my daughter. If it's too soon for my son, we'll just wait another six months or so and try again. Either way - they are GREAT BOOKS! I highly recommend them.
