Book Review: A CLASSIC on men's classics.
Summary: 5 Stars
Prior to buying this volume, the previous (positive) reviews left me expecting much.
In reality, it has exceeded expectations.
This is the bible re: beautiful classic menswear, (and accoutrements). Virtually every page informative and packed with fascinating details. Beautifully organized, layed-out, and densely illustrated with luscious color photography.
Above all: It's about style. (I would have preferred "Style" in the book's title -- to the word "Fashion".) Absolutely authoritative!
"Gentleman..." feeds one's passion for fine clothes and shoes (even if only vicariously.) And although few but the very wealthiest can afford the finest/best money can buy, I did not feel excluded from sharing in the writer's love of great taste and style. (There's much to be taken to heart by even the humblest sartorialist.)
In response to a reviewer's comment:
Of course it's Euro-centric. That's where the history lies, the traditions continue, and where the grand old workshops are. (Incidentally, the text is translated from German, but reads smoothly, conversationally, with only the fewest tell-tale phrases.) For a slightly more Americanized take on the subject, I'd recommend Alan Flusser's "Dressing The Man."
If there is one fault to mar this perfectly beautiful book, it is an out-of-focus shot of colorful shirtings, page 58.
Like the topics it covers, "Gentleman... A Timeless Guide to Fashion" is a work of art; unlikely to go out of style anytime soon!
