Book Review: beautiful garden with just a few weeds
Summary: 5 Stars
Even though I felt this story had flaws I still gave it five stars, because in spite of the flaws I really like the book. Actually, I enjoy it as a keeper to read again later more than I enjoyed the first reading. The reason for this is that in a second reading you can skip over or ignore the things you don't like. I agree with another reviewer that developing a character that is later summarily killed off is a flaw. It was very disappointing. I would have liked it if she had been allowed to live and have a romance of her own, or at least the author could have developed her friendship with the main character further. I have noticed though that this author almost seems jealous of other women being in the picture with her female main character. It's like only the heroine can have a good man or men. Any other women either have to be killed off or only have lousy, inferior boyfriends. I wish the author's female leads had better friendships with other women. To me that only adds to a story.
Another thing I find bothersome in this author's writing is that she has the main female characters do an awful lot of soliloquizing that serves no real purpose in telling the story. In this book she does it a lot, and it serves no real purpose, because our heroine never really acts on most of what she mulls over. Of course, in real life, people do a lot of mulling, but in a book only mulling that means something should be included. Much of what the main character ruminated on could have been summed up in a few sentences if the author just wanted to reveal the character's state of mind.
One other flaw in the story was that for all their heroic qualities, the alien male good guys seemed kind of ineffectual when it came time to fight the bad guys. Granted, the alien bad guys were way more technologically advanced, but still I thought that such intelligent, strong, determined, responsible good guys would have played a larger role in the slaves' bid for freedom. This just didn't seem in character for them.
I see these flaws as things that should have been weeded out of an otherwise beautifully healthy garden. You might be wondering, "Okay, with all these flaws, why did you give this book five stars?" Well, everything else besides the "weeds" was just so good that I loved the book anyway!
Summary of Genesis
Bri's uncertain of whether she finds it more unnerving or thrilling that Kole, a warrior well over six feet in height and built like the hulk, watches her with hungry, covetous eyes, until the slavers who captured her toss her into his habitat with him for breeding. Then she knows it's both, but it's even more unsettling to find herself the object of desire of two six and a half foot males-particularly since Kole and Dansk seem perfectly willing fight to the death to settle which of them gets to breed her.
