Book Reviews of Gargoyles: Clan Building Volume 1

Book Review: A must-have for Gargoyles fans!
Summary: 5 Stars

Even after all these years, Gargoyles is still my favorite television show. I've never found another show more well-written, with such a rich tapestry of characters, places, and time periods. So, when they stopped making new episodes of Gargoyles over ten years ago, I was crestfallen. But now, Gargoyles lives again! Clan-Building Volume 1 gives us all-new, CANON stories from series creator Greg Weisman. It picks up where season 2 left off (season 3 isn't canon).

Issues 1-2 adapt the television episode "The Journey", from season 3, into comic book form. Although season 3 as a whole isn't canon, the episode "The Journey" has long been considered "semi-canon" because it was written by Greg Weisman. However, the televised episode features lower production values than the season 1 and 2 episodes, has several moments that don't make logical sense, and also leaves out several key moments from Greg Weisman's script. So for anyone who wants to see what the episode "The Journey" SHOULD have looked like, reading issues 1-3 will show you.

Issues 3-5 feature the first truly new material. It tells the story of Goliath and Elisa's relationship problems, the Xanatos' halloween party, Brooklyn's loneliness since everyone else seems to have paired off, Thailog's attack on the Eyrie Building, Xanatos' trip to The White House, and the clones' ultimate choice regarding where their loyalties lie (they don't all make the same choice). Also, in a tag befitting a Gargoyle whose education was overseen by Xanatos, Thailog reveals his REAL motive for attacking the Eyrie Building, and we are introduced to a new Illuminati member who will make things interesting in future issues.

Issue 6 is a stand-alone story, and tells the tale of one of Goliath, Elisa, Angela, and Bronx's "World Tour" adventures, which wasn't televised, following their battle on Avalon. This time, they encounter a group of monks in the snowy mountains and also run into Coldstone. They try to convince Coldstone to come with them and re-join the clan, but things don't go as planned...

If you want to know what would have happened if Gargoyles had continued to have new episodes, this books is a MUST-HAVE for you!

Book Review: We are defenders of the night! We are Gargoyles!
Summary: 5 Stars

Every fan of the television show Gargoyles will be excited to learn that the creator, Greg Weisman, has picked up the story where it left off!

The first two chapters in this collection are a retelling of the Season Three premiere, "The Journey," the first episode of the show's third season. It is a good starting point for the comic, both for fans (to refresh their memory of where the canonical story left off) and newcomers (as an introduction to the mythology). The other four chapters in this book are the riveting beginning of a brand new Gargoyles story, "Clan-Building," which brings back many familiar characters and introduces some new ones.

This collection stands well on its own, but watching the show beforehand is recommended if you want the full effect. This is essential reading not only for fans of the show but also for anyone who generally enjoys comics and children's fiction. Along with its spinoff, Gargoyles: Bad Guys, I wholeheartedly feel that it is one of the best all-ages comics currently in print.

If you would like to revisit the show or introduce yourself to it, pick up Gargoyles: The Complete First Season and Gargoyles: Season 2 Volume 1 on DVD.

Book Review: Gargoyles - the story continues
Summary: 5 Stars

While rewatching episodes of the TV series with a friend (and thus checking online for news on any more episodes coming out on DVD), I found out that Greg was writing a comic series, and there were already several issues out. Needless to say, I was overjoyed.

I find trade backs more manageable long-term over individual comics, and easier to display on a bookshelf. This book is made well, containing issues 1-6, and includes the cover art from each issue... which is wonderful, since Greg Guler (the animated series' character designer) produced them. The writing is superb, picking up at "The Journey" (pretty much retelling it) and continuing as Greg envisioned. The artwork of each issue was really good... I had problems with issue 4, but only because that artist's style was notable different from the others, so the change between issues 3 to 4, and 4 to 5 was a bit jarring. Even so, each artist is of good talent.

I've already started recommending this series to others, and I'm looking forward to more. I believe the next set of 6 issues will be put into a second trade back. Can't wait.

Book Review: At Last!
Summary: 5 Stars

After years of waiting, Gargoyles fans are finally treated to what they deserve: A canon continuation of Gargoyles, written by Greg Weisman himself!

I highly recommend this graphic novel collection to any fan of the Gargoyle series, especially one who craves the further adventures of Goliath and company and who won't settle for the non-canon garbage that is The Goliath Chronicles.

Book Review: A Staple for Gargoyles Lovers
Summary: 5 Stars

I've watched and rewatched the gargoyles TV series probably a hundred times and loved it. The clan building books are a great continuation from the first episode of the 3rd series. The art is nicely done and as usual the writing is amazing. The price is nice too.
