Book Reviews of Game Genie Video Game Enhancer

Book Review: From An Old-School Gamer..
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow, talk about a trip through nostalgic lane. The Game Genie was a God-send to us old school gamers back in the NES/SNES/Genesis days. Of course, there would be other Game Genie-like enhancers i.e., Gameshark that would come into the 32-bit/64-bit era....But still, we old school gamers OWE everything to this product.

Now, for the younger generation that have got addicted to Halo, Gears Of War, God Of War, etc...Let me explain what the Game Genie was to us: if you take an 8-bit game like Contra (which is a GREAT GAME by the way), you got 3 lives, and one hit was fatal. Now, you may think "Oh, how unfair!" You have to remember that gamers paid $40 to $50 for one game, and if you can beat that game in 2 hours, you would of felt cheated. Back in the day, yes, games were HARD, but they were designed that way because they (the video game developers) thought that if a customer was to beat it in one day, it would be a loss on their part because the customer would of returned it and got their money back. Now, some games were just down-right sadistic: Battletoads, the Ghouls and Ghosts series, and the list goes on...so, eventually someone got smart and created the Game Genie.

Now, I actually owned the Game Genie as a kid, and wow...plowing through Contra made things a HECK of a LOT easier. But the reason I used it on Contra is because I wanted to memorize the patterns of the enemies (you could do this without the Game Genie, but trust me, it takes a lot of memorization and time to remember every enemy from every level and also the pitfalls for each stage), and to see the end. But for most gamers, this was just a taste of what Game Genie had to offer. Game Genie actually HELPED the gamer beat a game, and if the game was fun, they would go back and try to beat it WITHOUT the Game Genie. Now, for TOUGH games, like Contra, Ninja Gaiden, the Ghouls and Ghosts series, this was like God coming down from heaven and saying to the gamer: "Here you need this."

How did The Game Genie work? Well, you put your game into the slot, put The Game Genie into your NES/SNES/Genesis, put in the codes that you wanted, and you were ready to kick some butt.

Now, you have to realize that most games were compatible with the Game Genie. Keyword: Most. Not all of the NES library games were compatible with The Game Genie; either they gave you NO CODES, or they gave you codes that either made the game HARDER than it already was. Take for example Frankenstein: The Monster Returns for the NES; the Game Genie had these codes: Almost Invisibility, Full Invisibility (May cause the game to freeze), Cannot Collect Extra Energy, and One Hit Is Fatal.

Sure the Game Genie wasn't perfect with some games, but with the games that it was compatible with...talk about a God-send. If you can still get your hands on one, take it. Also, if you are playing a VERY HARD game and you can get even passed the first stage, say this if someone is around: "This is the reason why Game Genie was invented." Happy Gaming!
