Book Review: PEEPING TOMS ALL .......

Peeping Toms all .... that's us really as we view the daily life of Chief Inspector Alan Banks on the printed page. True it is a 'police procedural' and it is a daily record in the life of a policeman, however, if it were only that it would never rise above a Bill Slider or a Charlie Resnick, mystery. But there is the rub, it does rise above. At times even soars a bit.
Years back I had read IN A DRY SEASON, which I gather has now become one of Peter Robinson's better known works, and I thought it then a very good piece of writing. So GALLOW'S VIEW is only my second reading from the quickly growing body of Peter Robinson's work. Though I can hardly be termed a 'fan' of his, I do find his books smooth, interesting reads. Have a few more recent paperbacks of his to read in the future, too.
But back to the 'rising above' issue: Alan Banks is not a happy man in many respects. As evidenced from this first book he smokes too much, he drinks too much, he pays too much attention to another skirt when his wife needs his attention. He has problems at times relating to both his boss, and to his subalterns. At times he loses his patience with some people while at times he feels pathos for others, and I imagine there are many times he wishes he was back in London. In short, Alan Banks is a divided man, while at the same time a very human one.
Well, all those characteristics and flaws are very real and human, and we as readers are quite taken in by them. Hey, he is almost one of us. For me it is the 'just like the other fellows' quality that endears Alan Banks to me. I will continue to read the Chief Inspector Banks' books not nessasarily because I believe them to so much better than John Harvey's body of work, or Cynthia Harrod Eagles' work, but because I just plain like Alan Banks. And I want to see how this simple, yet very complicated man's future life unfolds. Reality in literature is very oft times difficult to come by.
As long as Mr. Robinson keeps serving up a realistic Alan Banks, reality cannot be far behind. And neither can his attentive reader's appreciation either.

Summary of Gallows View: The First Inspector Banks Mystery
Former London policeman Alan Banks relocated to Yorkshire seeking some small measuer of peace. But depravity and violence are unfortunately not unique to large cities. His new venue, the quaint little village of Eastvale, seems to have more than its fair share of malefactors--among them a brazen Peeping Tom who hides in night's shadows spying on attractrive, unsuspecting ladies as they prepare for bed. And when an elderly woman is found brutally slain in her home, Chief Inspector Banks wonders if the voyeur has increased the awful intensity of his criminal activities. But whether relatied or not, perverse local acts and murderous ones are combining to profoundly touch Banks's suddenly vulnerable perosonal life, forcing a dedicated law officer to make hard choices he'd dearly hoped would never be necessary.
