Book Reviews of Fury (Star Wars: Legacy of the Force, Book 7)Book Review: Plot holes big enough to fly the death star through Summary: 2 Stars
Let me start off by saying is that up to and including the Yuuzhan Vong series, I was an avid expanded universe fan. Let me continue by saying the best thing about this book is that its one step closer to more talented authors taking over the star wars universe. This latest series, and this latest entry in that series are disappointments. It feels like nothing more then a quick cash-in rehash of the prequel trilogy stretched into a 9 part series so that Karen Traviss could include Boba Fett.
I loved Aaron Allston's X-wing novels. Even the first book in this series set up a decent plot line. However, the star wars mockery that has insued is shameful. In this book, (minor spoilers ahead) Ben is the only one in the universe that thinks Jacen is capable of having murdered his mother. Despite the fact that Jacen had child jedi killed, set fire to the Wookie homeworld and tortured and killed hundreds of thousands of people....naaa he couldnt have killed his aunt. "Oh ben, Jacen's just a sith master who tortured you in secret and brings death and destruction wherever he goes, hes not that evil." Tycho Celchu allows the jedi to steal his shuttle for their mission without putting up any resistance but as soon as he gets a chance he rats them out of Jacen? 65-year-old Lando is having a baby? Jacen cries like a little girl when his little girl isnt locked in a box with him at all times? In addition, the plot device of force phantoms is just absurd. "If you electrocute that mynock youll electrocute yourself because its a force phantom of you."
What i am trying to say, with about as much finesse as these books are written with, is that the number of mis-characterizations, logic problems and plot holes is baffling. This book is generic sci-fi fodder with star wars names and places. The magic is gone.
Book Review: like the author, don't like this story arc Summary: 2 Stars
all the Jedi are just way too dumb in this story line, and i hate the use of so much bounty hunter stuff and the mandelorian soldiers, etc., from Traviss. it's like she can't get interested in the story parameters and has to make up weird ideas to keep herself entertained!
Allston is a very good writer, but i don't think the authors had that much input into the general outline of the stories for this particular arc. it's just not very good and doesn't make any sense compared with what novels came before. maybe i'm biased because i've read all of the series. LOTF is much better than the Dark Nest Trilogy, which was just sad, but i want more complex stories than these.
there were so many cool ideas ideas from earlier books that never got pursued, like the Fallenasse (i'm probably not spelling it right), Vergere and all her history and training of Jacen, the concept of the Force as flowing river that certain species were able to tap into where Luke first conceived of his Great River project, etc. MANY more great ideas that have fallen by the wayside.
the bad guys are very one dimensional, there is no back story to this arc, no history of the characters, no galactic politics nor society, this arc is just blah.
Book Review: Skip This One Summary: 2 Stars
It is very rare when a book that is ostensibly part of a series can actually be skipped altogether. This is ultimately the case with Fury, a book that ends with every character in exactly the same place they were when the book began. If you skip Fury altogether, you won't miss anything. It fails to advance any of the story arcs, and those few changes that do occur end up being reversed by the end of the story. As just one example, Jacen begins the story by abducting his daughter. By the end of the story, she has been abducted back and Jacen is once again alone in the galaxy. Sadly, this is what happens with every ongoing story arc in the series: A change happens at the beginning of the book, but things are returned to the status quo by the end of the book.
Book Review: fury (star wars) Summary: 2 Stars
In a nutshell, I was disapointed by this whole series. The moral delimas contained in the book are not at all realistic from any standpoint. I could understand why Luke couldn't kill Jacan, if the reason stated was because he was a close relitive and much beloved by the family, before he turned to the dark side. But, all the agony about killing him because it would turn Luke to the dark side is just so much bunk. After all, the Jedi kill people by the scores when it was necessay. And no great moral battle is encountered. And. You killed off two of the best characters that could have made for some interesting stories later. Even though I stuck to this story line for the whole span, I never really felt connected to the characters and never had any sympothy for them.
Book Review: same old boring storylines again Summary: 2 Stars
What would it take for the star wars authors to give a different spin on any star wars series . One wants the know how the Sith ever got to be in power for more than a year. With the ever powerful Luke, Leia and Han ,why even develop an antagonist in any series you know how it will end before you start to read any series. They had Thrawn , now Jacen and they will kill him off in one series as well and not let him be developed as an interesting and powerful character.
Why are the bad guys always stupid by the end of every series they ever write. For once give us something different do not insult us with the same old stuff and show everyone that the Sith are actually something that are a real threat to the star wars universe.
