Book Review: Liberate Your Muse
Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent book which outlines approaches to effectively combat creative obstacles confronting songwriters. In particular, Chapter Five's section on "generating raw material" is worth the asking price. The material helps liberate your muse from the left-brain tyranny and dismissive judgment that are at the foundation of the dreaded "writer's block" phenomenon, which prevents the easy development of beautiful lyrics, catchy melodies, artful chord progressions, and clever arrangements.
Now please don't misunderstand. The book won't guarantee you a Top 100 Billboard release though by applying the suggested techniques, you'll experience much less anxiety and be astonished at how much work you've accomplished, which helps builds confidence for the next round. And so it goes. As with anything in life, you do need to make a sincere effort else you are just reading another book. And while it helps if you have existing songwriting chops and facility with recording technology, I see no reason why a newcomer couldn't benefit from these ideas. In fact anyone engaged with creative arts and endeavors could learn something.
Lastly in reading some of the other reviews - I'm not sure why some complain so strongly about the "lodge" concept as if that is all the book has to offer. While lodge participation provides a powerful experience,
(at least in my opinion), it is by no means essential to experience progress. So if you find the lodge idea generally unappealing or can't find one locally then don't worry about it. There is still much to be learned from this book if you make a genuine effort to apply its numerous ideas.
