Book Reviews of From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

Book Review: A Bad Role Model for Lucas and Other Kids
Summary: 5 Stars

Claudia starts planning her running away weeks before she carries it out. First she thinks of her companion. She thinks of her middle brother, Jamie. She picks him because he's the richest of all their siblings. She decides to run away to the New York Museum of Art instead of running away to stay in the woods, unlike most kids would think to do. The way Claudia plans running away, she packs all of her and her brother's clothes in her violin and his trombone cases. They stay on the bus after everyone is dropped off at school, and they walk to the train station and head into the city.

Claudia and Jamie walk forty blocks to the museum. When they finally get there, they stay there until night and hide in the restroom booths. When everyone leaves except the night guard, they sleep in old beds. The next day after breakfast outside the museum, they head back to the Met and see many people lined up at the museum. Then they see a two-foot tall statue of an angel. Claudia suddenly feels very devoted to learning about the angel. Back in the museum, they wait for the daily paper to come out. Jamie and Claudia have many arguments about money issues. In the end, they don't buy the paper but steal it. Claudia finds out from the paper that people have no idea who created the angel piece of art. When she finds out that people believe Michelangelo created the piece of art but that there's no proof, she herself searches for the answer.

Claudia and Jamie do practically everything in the museum, including bathing, eating and sleeping there. When they find money at the bottom of the fountain, they have less money problems. When they finally find proof, they anonymously send it to museum officials. The officials send back a letter saying that they have already found that proof and that they need more proof to solve that mystery.

Suddenly the kids decide that the only way to find out is to go to the owner of the statue herself, Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler. They have to find the file that has the secret to ever know if Michelangelo did the statue. After finally finding the truth, they head home.

I would recommend this book to someone who wants less crime but still a mystery. I especially liked this book because instead of the kids being at home and having to go to the museum, they're on the run and living in the museum. Overall, this book to me has been very enjoyable to read.

Summary of From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

When suburban Claudia Kincaid decides to run away, she knows she doesn't just want to run from somewhere she wants to run to somewhere--to a place that is comfortable, beautiful, and preferably elegant. She chooses the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Knowing that her younger brother, Jamie, has money and thus can help her with the serious cash flow problem she invites him along.

Once settled into the museum, Claudia and Jamie, find themselves caught up in the mystery of an angel statue that the museum purchased at an auction for a bargain price of $250. The statue is possibly an early work of the Renaissance master Michelangelo, and therefore worth millions. Is it? Or isn't it? Claudia is determined to find out. This quest leads Claudia to Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, the remarkable old woman who sold the statue and to some equally remarkable discoveries about herself.

After reading this book, I guarantee that you will never visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or any wonderful, old cavern of a museum) without sneaking into the bathrooms to look for Claudia and her brother Jamie. They're standing on the toilets, still, hiding until the museum closes and their adventure begins. Such is the impact of timeless novels . . . they never leave us. E. L. Konigsburg won the 1967 Newbery Medal for this tale of how Claudia and her brother run away to the museum in order to teach their parents a lesson. Little do they know that mystery awaits!
