Book Reviews of From Julia Child's Kitchen

Book Review: The cookbook once you've finished Mastering...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite Julia Child cookbook. To me it is a bit more personal than 'Mastering'. It seems like the recipes are there to enjoy not impress. These are the recipes that Julia made for Paul on nights when there was nothing special going on. Following the recipes in this book feels more like you've gone to Aunt Julia's house to spend the weekend rather than taking a cooking course from Mrs. Child. The recipe for 'Sauteed Chicken Breasts with Tomatoes and Tarragon' is my go-to recipe. It is delicious and never fails to impress. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do.

Book Review: Getting good at it
Summary: 5 Stars

This is Julia's first not-totally-French cookbook. The very first recipe, Potage Bonne Femme, is a leek and potato soup that I know is a show stopper. (I know because I have "stopped the show" at my house and my office with its aroma several times!) Her instructions are detailed for the novice cook, but paragraphed in such a way that the practiced chef can jump through ordinary techniques to get to the crux of the recipe. This is the book that started my wife and I on our culinary adventures. Here is a guidebook for the reader to "cut a new swath" through the kitchen.

Book Review: Good basic cookbook
Summary: 5 Stars

I have purchased several of her books and I like this one the best. I particularly like her use of fresh herbs. I began growing herbs and find that they make a huge difference in flavor.

A couple of years ago my sister came for Thanksgiving and I made the turkey using her method of mirapoix, wine and fresh herbs (someone had posted it on an internet site before I bought the book). Only change I made was to add a lot of fresh sage. The family is still talking about what a wonderful flavor the turkey and the gravy had.

Book Review: The Best Cookbook Julia Ever Wrote
Summary: 5 Stars

As an avid collector of cookbooks ( I may be 12, but I've already purchased about 300 books ), it is hard to choose a favorite among them. This book, however, ranks at the top.I love " From Julia Child's Kitchen " in that it features almost every recipe she's every created, tons of photos, and lots and lots of interesting text. You really don't need any other Julia Child cookbooks except this one ( okay, so " Mastering the Art of French Cooking " is an exception ). I think everyone who has a stove should have this book!

Book Review: A Cooking Class and Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

As a child I enjoyed watching Julia Child on TV and as I read From Julia Child's Kitchen it's in her own voice that I am hearing her words. The text is so clearly written that anyone, at any cookling ability level can easily follow her instructions. The pictures were a bit disappointing being small, older and all black and white, but besides that the book is a gem. If you are looking for just a collection of recipes - look elsewhere - but if you want a course in master cookery from a master chef - this is the book for you!
