Book Review: Best in the series so far...
Summary: 5 Stars
Harris is hit or miss for me. She'll put out a book that is just okay, then the next in the series is really good, then the next is okay and so on with no real consistency. Some feel like a book of its own, others feel like a short story drawn out. With From Dead to Worse Harris hit the nail on the head and delivered perhaps her best of the series.
The intriguing part about paranormal fiction is that they bring the supernatural into the natural, the magical into the everyday world. This was perhaps some of the problem in a couple of her earlier books, that she didn't write enough about the supernatural community and so was left with a flat story. Not so here. The reader is almost overwhelmed with the amount of supernatural leaving the reader to want to read more and more, faster and faster. We see a feud between Werewolves. We see a fed between Vampires. A confrontation between humans and witches. A fairy or two are walking amidst the pages. And, of course, Sookie the telepath is in the middle of all of it. This made for such an action filled book that not even half way through you were already eagerly reading and could have easily been a stand alone book of its own, only to continue on for another 150 pages with more conflict and strife. The supernatural certainly took front and center with this her 8th book in the series.
Only two downsides that could have been a bigger problem than they were. First, there was so much supernatural and so many different conflicting factions, that it drew away from the storyline some as each group 50-75 page focus before it moved on to the next group. Hopefully Harris will tighten this up some in the next book and join all the warring factions together into a more coherent and tight plot. The only other downside is that the whole Sookie falling in love and then dumping her man by the end of the book because of how bad he is based on his decisions is getting old. Write a man in that will ultimately not disappoint her or don't make it serious. The reader doesn't need to be strung along knowing all to well what the outcome will be.
Minor downsides as I felt this the 8th book is the best in the series, behind only the 7th (All Together Dead). I can't wait to read the next installment and see where Sookie and the supernatural community goes. Definite recommend for fans of the series.
