Book Reviews of French Women Don't Get FatBook Review: Romanticizes French women somewhat Summary: 3 Stars
The advice shared in this book is fine. I have no quarrel with it. I will agree with some of the other reviewers that some of the strategies the author suggests come much easier if one lives in a city than if one lives in a rural area. However, adjustments can be made.
However, her point about French women effortlessly controlling their weight is a myth from what I've observed. I lived on a French island, and believe you me, those French women watched every morsel they put into their mouth. Oftentimes, I would see women nibbling on a few slices of cataloupe and ham for lunch and that's it (far different from the indulgent lunches that the author describes). I knew of plenty of French people who went to the gym (and this is on an island, where they could have the choice of swimming or some other water sport).
I'm not saying that the author's advice is wrong. I think many of her strategies are on target. However, what she's describing may be the France of old, not the France of today.
Book Review: Fun Summary: 3 Stars
Always wondered why French women don't get fat and now I know! What fun reading with some great insights into good eating habits, but at the same time having a healthy attitude to food. This book helps bring back the fun in eating and not worrying about all the negativity that is attached to eating these days.

Book Review: fool proof advice Summary: 3 Stars
This is a great little book, very conversational and not at all like a diet book. She basically is just telling you common sense eat less and exercise more and cut out excess sugar where possible. She gives you easy recipes that sound good. She also gives you great advice on how to relax, because I do not how to do that.
Book Review: French Women DO Get Fat Summary: 2 Stars
I wish the author would have come out with a Veuve Cliquot diet instead. It would have been a lot more fun and equally effective. This regime supposedly is all about dragging your groceries here and there, eating better (and lots of really awful soup, some of which may act as a diuretic. The Beverly Hills diet calls for lots of fruit, but either way you end up spending a lot of time in the ladies room.)
Most French women smoke A LOT. A LOT. Most of France smokes a lot. That revs up one's metabolism and cuts hunger. I know of one really famous French model whose "secret" was an unlimited stash of thyroxin, which when taken in huge amounts, causes osteoporosis -- among other things.
There isn't anything different here. In the words of Rita Mae Brown, if you wrap a red bow around it ....
Book Review: Boring Summary: 2 Stars
This is a rehash of every diet you've ever tried. Don't bother. This book may be helpful if you're 5 lbs more than you think you should weigh, but not for those of us who weigh more than 20 lbs over the weight we'd like to be. The only good thing the author says is to lose the guilt about the food you eat. That mind set is probably the chief reason many of us are overweight.
