Book Review: Minimizing the Perceived Conception

Esther de Costa Meyer has brought the true modus operandi of the workings of the world's most famous architect. When looking at the finished buildings conceived and designed by Frank Gehry, one immediately conjures images of him sitting in front of his computer creating his advant guard creations. To my amazement, nothing can be farther from the truth.
The Author brings forth Gehry's true conceptualization of his genius. The basic tenants of Gehry's process is to assess what the client needs and instead of creating the structure from the outside in, Gehry does a flip-flop and goes from the inside out. Gehry doesn't touch a computer. The fact of the matter is that Gehry's first love is art and he begins his work by sketching his ideas on paper. In looking at these renderings, they broadly give the basis of architectural thought along with what I would call abstract artistic liberation. At first sight one can envision creative doodling. However in Gehry's grand scheme, he will refine the sketches and later his team of draftsmen will create models in various sizes. Only upon this long and creative process will it be given to his CAD team to be rendered on the computer.
Gehry never touches a computer, he starts with sketches as it evolves on paper, models the structures and finally puts it on the computer chip. Gehry in essence is old school and is more of an artist/grand director of a majestic design symphony for all to see, work in and live in.
These are great renderings and great insights from Esther de Costa Meyer, in which you can do yourself a favor and treat your senses to another world beyond the ordinary.

World-renowned architect Frank Gehry considers drawing a conceptual tool: his fluid, unpredictable sketches demonstrate how he searches for ideas with his pen. This handsome book, slipcased in a cardboard box that itself recalls Gehry's furniture, offers an in-depth analysis of his drawings during the two decades since computer generated design began to dominate architectural practice. Esther da Costa Meyer analyzes his idiosyncratic style, his inspiration in the art of the past and of the present, and his contributions to the art of architectural draftsmanship. As often as possible, she allows Gehry to speak for himself.Da Costa Meyer argues that Gehry's sketches are only the first link in a long chain that passes through numerous models and computer renderings until the building is finally completed. She notes, however, that these whimsical works powerfully express Gehry's critique of the dogmatic strains of modernism prevalent when he began his career and his own attempts to bring humour, emotion, and drama back to architecture.Architecture Books
