Book Review: The definitive book on Forth

This book presents a very good coverage of modern Forth and comes from the world's second Forth programmer, a close friend of Chuck Moore (the inventer of the language), and president of Forth, Inc., the company they founded back in 1973. Forth has been one of those sleeper languages - not as widely known as most but used in a lot of places where few are aware of the implementation language - such as the FedEx hand scanners, Sun workstation boot software and many NASA space vehicles. This book give a great introduction to Forth and is up to date with the current ANSI standard. It is a good complement to Leo Brodie's "Starting Forth" (which, by the way, Forth Inc. owns the copyright to) and brings Forth into the 21st century. If you have ever had even the slightest curiosity about Forth or would like to look at a refreshing alternative to trendy languages today, get this book. For the price, you can not go wrong and I think you will be amazed by the beauty and simplicity (and power) of Forth.

We at FORTH, Inc. have trained several thousand programmers to use Forth with versions of this book. Over the years weÂ? have adapted the content to reflect changes in common Forth usage and evolving computer and OS technology. WeÂ? have also continually modified the problems to reflect the kinds of issues programmers face in real-world programming. This Fourth Edition is the latest, updated in 2006.We have included some sections on topics (such as multitasking) that do not apply to all Forth systems. The reason for this is to convey some of the range of capabilities of modern Forth implementations and how they can apply to writing important applications in Forth.
The course presented in this book is intended to introduce Forth to people with little or no prior experience in the language. However, it does assume the reader is familiar with general computing concepts (bytes, memory, addresses, data objects, etc.). Prior programming experience in some language is helpful (though not required).
