Book Review: 10 hours of excellent instruction

This is a set of 5 two-hour long practices, each on two CDs aimed at intermediate to advanced yoga students. The practices are designed to be done on consecutive days. Each practice has a very specific focus, and together, the 5 practices stretch and strengthen every area of the body.

I really love this set, and I was particularly impressed with the sequencing. Each practice is extremely well designed to prepare you for that day's apex poses. Even the ab work is tailored to the day's focus. For example, on day 1, where the focus is on back bends, you do "abs with a roll" in which you place a rolled up mat or towel between your legs and squeeze your legs together as you do crunches. This was something I had never done before, and was very effective at releasing tension in the lower back.

Ana Forrest also has a fantastic understanding of external and internal anatomy, breath, and their relation to every asana in the the practices, is excellent at conveying her knowledge. I learn something new about poses I've been doing forever when doing this set.

The practices have the following focuses:

Day 1:
The first day of the 5-day course focuses on opening and strengthening the shoulders and back. Because Forrest yoga uses longer holds, there are fewer poses, so the practice feels very focused, almost narrow (it was a little weird to me to not have opened my hamstrings much in a 2-hour long practice). With less breadth, this practice has more depth, and I felt fantastic in the apex pose of this class, viparita dandasana, which I often avoid because it can bother my shoulders. (The alignment descriptions helped my shoulders feel safer as well.)

Day 2:
The second day focuses on opening the hips, hamstrings, and quads and includes a Forrest staple: a sequence of warrior II variations (warrior II, extended warrior, warrior interlock) that is extremely intense.
Apex poses included forearm balance and handstand. I found the instructions to "squeeze the ankles together and spread the toes" particularly helpful in allowing me to balance a few seconds longer in these inversions than I usually do. Yoginidandasana was the other apex pose.

Day 3:
This is another class primarily devoted to backbending. Apex poses include lunge backbend (a variation of king pigeon pose and dancer.

Day 4:
The theme for this class is strength. The idea of a strength-building Forrest yoga class terrified me, but I really loved this one. While on day 2, the longest warrior sequence has 5 variations, this practice has a 9-variation long warrior sequence. This standing series turned out to be fantastic warm-up for the apex poses: pashasana (noose pose) and yoganidra.

Day 5:
This final practice is focused on backbending. The apex pose is thunderbolt, and there's a really nice seated series at the end designed to unwind the back.
