Book Reviews of Follow the RiverBook Review: Excellent! Summary: 5 Stars
Follow The River has to be the best book I have ever read. This is a true story of survival. I grew up in the Virginia/West Virginia areas described in the book and am very familiar with the New, Kanawha, and Ohio Rivers and other surrounding areas/rivers as well. I loved following Mary's journey and refering back to the maps in the front of the book as I went. In fact, I now live on the Ohio River and was thrilled to know that Mary's journey quite possibly lead her through what is now my yard. The physical discriptions of the landscape were right on and the story of Mary's determined spirit was amazing. This is a book you can not set down. I am currently reading Panther In The Sky, also by Thom and it is excellent as well.
Book Review: Entertaining and Gripping Story Summary: 5 Stars
Mary Ingles is a white woman who is abducted from her homestead along with her sister-in-law and her two sons. Subject to the harrowing death of friends and family and a grueling journey south, Mary's steadfast nature and friendly personality wins the respect of her captors.
This novel was excellent. Mr Thom's grasp of dialect was comprehensive, and his female characters were well-written. I particularly like Mary's relationship with the Dutch woman. I also liked the Native characters.
I found the journey at the end of the book a bit drawn out. I think it could've benefited from some editing. Overall, this is one of the best books I've read all year. I read it in less than a day. 5 stars.
Book Review: Incredible true story by a gifted storyteller Summary: 5 Stars
Not since Last of the Mohicans and James Fenimore Cooper has there been a writer on early American history as gifted as James Alexander Thom. This is the true ordeal of Mary Ingles, kidnapped by the Shawnee in 1755 and who walked 1000 miles over 6 weeks to return to her husband in present day W. Virginia. The colorful language and authentic feel of this novel makes you feel like you are right there, witnessing everything. The author's respect for Mary Ingles is apparent in his vision and writing style. There are graphic parts but please understand the context - it's not a horror novel. The gory parts are how life really was at that time. A brilliant work and one not to miss if you are a history buff.
Book Review: My favorite all time book Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book was I was about 16 (10 years ago) and it was truly the only book I read as a teenager that I enjoyed and wasn't able to put down. Now 10 years later I came across the book in a box of old belongings and I read it again! The only book I've ever read twice and both times I couldn't put it down! Her (Mary's) journey and courage just blew me away! And I loved that the author wrote at the end what was actaully true and what he had to make up as he wrote it. I will definately look for more books by this author! I hope they're all as good! If you know someone who isn't much of a reader and you wish they were - this is the book to hook them on reading!
Book Review: Undying Faith Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished the book this morning and could not wait to find out more about Mary.I live in Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley. So this story really touched close to home.It made me wonder if I would have had the courage and strength to go on.I felt it was I that was Mary.It made me think about the woods beside my house. To imagine this woman, naked, starving, battered and totally at the mercy of freezing wind, rain, and snow getting up each day to go on leaves me in such awe of her courage and strength.I understood her relationship with "Ghetel".I was inspired by her faith in God.Thank you Thom for this book.It will forever stay in my mind and heart.
