Book Reviews of Flashman at the ChargeBook Review: Flashman around the world Summary: 5 Stars
Too bad they didn't have frequent flier miles in Flashy's day; this Flashman adventure starts in London and sees the character halfway around the world to India, with stops in the Crimea and the Russian heartland. As one would expect, its a story global in scope and as usual for the series, quite true to history. Disparate topics such as the treatment of Russian serfs and the Afghan rebel leaders are woven well into the tale.Another reviewer hits on the only problem in this book: the number of locales strains against the bonds of credulity. Flashman, dispatched to fight in the Crimean War, is basically involved in an entirely different story by the end of the book. I really would've liked to see a little more of the Charge of the Light Brigade and less of Russia. But Fraser does such a great job of painting these historical scenes and Flashy is just so entertaining, that I can't give this book any less than 4 1/2 stars. Since Amazon doesn't offer that feature, there's really no problem in rounding up to 5.
Book Review: Flashy's delightfully cynical view of the Crimean War Summary: 5 Stars
If you only ever read one book on one of the most famous blunders in British military history, then it should be this one. Flashy's uncomplimentary assessment of the key players (Raglan, Lucan, Cardigan etc.) often made while he was busy trying to mount a getaway horse, or someone else's wife, is a worm's-eye view that is somehow most appropriately summarises one of the more pointless campaigns of the age. However, the excellent account of the early part of the Crimean war is only part of what this book has to offer: his imprisonment in Russia, and subsequent involvement in the Russian incursion into Central Asia, where, as usual, he ends up in the tents of leaders on both sides, is equally fascinating. This is a rich, well-researched, entertaining book that I can return to again and again.
Book Review: The Charge of the Flashman Brigade! Summary: 5 Stars
Flashman fights (and rogers) his way through central Asia in another raucous installment of the "Flashman Papers." Called to serve in the Crimean War (the most botched conflict in British history), Harry finds himself charging the Russian guns at Sevastopol, captured by the tsar's minions and fighting in an Islamic jihad on the shores of the Caspian sea. Replete with enough sex, violence, satire, humor and drama to satisfy anyone, "Flashman at the Charge" is sure to please.
Book Review: Fraser does it again, and again, and... Summary: 5 Stars
Flashman at the Charge is one of his best. A cad who can keep you laughing and clinging to the edge of your chair. All the way through this installment of the Flashman papers, Flashman keeps getting into trouble and out again, a little wiser and "more expirianced." If you want to read any of the Flashman books, this one is a winner! Or add it to the list of wonderful Fraser books that you have loved already! I would recommend this book to anyone with a passion for learning and laughing
Book Review: Boggle your new friends Summary: 5 Stars
Not only great humongous fun to read, thanks to this book I managed to boggle several acquintances in Sofia, Bulgaria. They can't understand how an Indonesian could know such detail about Count Ignatieff (a street in Sofia was named after him), especially that wonderful gem about his eyes. Loved all the stuff about the charge. What wonderful history lesson! I've read nearly all the Flashman series, and I dread the day when the well dries up. Please Mr. Fraser, keep 'em coming!
