This book does a tremendous service to the memory of all veterans, in that it shows their humanity, as well as their heroism. It also shows how even when a war is over, the suffering goes on for many years afterward. A fitting tribute to ordinary men, in extraordinary circumstances.

I gave this as a birthday gift to my husband and I finished reading it before he did. I thought it was well researched and written. Very sad, but helped me understand what they went through. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the famous picture and statue.
