Book Reviews of Flags of Our FathersBook Review: Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue Summary: 5 Stars
When I first saw this book I never imagined the depth behind it. Some of the things in this book are hard to believe that it actually happened.
The flag that was raised on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima on top of Mt. Suribachi became to be known as a symbol that America was winning the war and that everything was going well over seas. That was almost the exact opposite of what was really happening.
The Japanese had a belief that death comes before dishonor, meaning that they didn't care if they died as long as it was for Japan. They never surrendered because that was dishonorable. They also tormented captured marines it is a very graphic book.
I recommend this book to anyone who like true war stories but can handle profanity and graphic violence content. The book is very serious and should not be taken lightly.
Book Review: Wonderful story of humility Summary: 5 Stars
I was very surprised after reading this book to learn that the flagraising on Mt. Suribachi in Iwo Jima was nothing more than a simple replacement flag implant. These six men were brought together from all parts of the country, assigned to Iwo Jima along with thousands of other young American men and women, and by sheer circumstance, helped one another replace a crippled original flag on top of the mountain. A photographer happened to snap a shot of the flagraising, and instantly became a national symbol of courage and eventually the monument of The Marine Corps Memorial. The book is filled with clear images of life for a World War II soldier (Pacific Theater), strength, love, friendship, humility, fear, courage, and extreme struggle. I recommend this book to every American citizen.
Book Review: Lessons for a Modern Generation Summary: 5 Stars
Flags of Our Fathers tells the heartfelt story of the flag raisers of Iwo Jima and showcases the virtues that made these men American heros from their courage to a sense of duty and honor to a country that you love and are willing to die for. On it's face this book is a story of a battle during WW2 and the resaulting photograph that would change the life of three survivors forever, but Flags of Our Fathers is so much more than that. It's a story of life and death and how the two often intersect. This should be required reading for every high school and college age student in the hopes that they would learn that everything has a price and some things in life are worth fighting for like the WW2 generation knew. Sadly, I feel like my generation has forgetten this.
Book Review: Awesome Awesome Book!! One of The Best Summary: 5 Stars
This book is one of the top 5 books I have ever read. I could not put it down. I read the book first and then watched the movie. The movie leaves out the critical details of the soldiers history, their home life, and their youth that makes them real and more than just a bronze statue. They had families, girlfriends, parents, and lives that some of them never had a chance to finish, like so many other young soldiers in WWII. This book is not about just the soldiers raising the Flag it is about all soldiers in WWII, and many of whom we have forgotten. James Bradley has done a magnificent job of remembering his father, the flag raisers, and the sacrifice so many Americans made during WWII.
Book Review: Probably my all time favorite book Summary: 5 Stars
Flags of Our Fathers is probably the best book I have every read. I enjoy reading a lot of military history for both the WWII and Vietnam periods and this book is a great representation of the courageous men and women that have fought and do fight for this country. I had tears in my eyes at the end of this book. I would recommend this to anyone that likes a good story. I talks about war, life, and life after war. James Bradley honors his father's life and memory in a way not many others can.
