Book Reviews of First Book of Sushi (World Snacks)Book Review: Turning raw fish into fun rhymes Summary: 4 Stars
This is a fun twist on your typical children's book. Its got colorful pictures and whimsical rhymes, but the funniest part is the subject matter -- sushi: "I'll take yellowtail hamachi / and a red maguro slice. / Big, BIG futomaki has so many grains of rice!"
I'm sure my kids don't understand exactly what what's being talked about (and sometimes I don't either). But there's a pleasant pace to the rhymes and the words are fun to say out loud ("tekka maki" and "kappa maki" sound a bit like the nonsense phrases of Dr. Seuss).
Don't forget to notice that the last line of the story is actually on the back of the book. The first couple times I read it to my kids I didn't see that, and the book seemed to come to a puzzlingly abrupt end.
Book Review: our 13 month old loves this book Summary: 4 Stars
My girlfriend loves sushi, but her doctor prohibited her from eating it while she was pregnant. I bought this book during her pregnancy as a joke, but it turns out to be one of our daughter's favorites. The bold graphics catch her attention and the rhymes maintain it. My one complaint is that the rhythm of the book is inconsistent: after the first seven pages, the amount of text per page doubles, which means that she wants to turn the page before we are done reading the text.
Book Review: Teacher's Evaluation Summary: 4 Stars
For pre-school or kindergarten children...story is fine. For 1st through 3rd grade, it's a wonderful textbook...for concepts, culture and Japanese language. Lend's itself to "theme" teaching including artwork, kimono dress-up, etc. May not be as much a "cookbook" for kids as it is a resource for variety of concepts. In some ways, as good as Sesame Street videos.
Book Review: best board book Summary: 4 Stars
this book is greatthe art is absolutly beautiful, and it provides a nice change from the usual board book topics of things like animals, vehicles, etc. texture is very important in the illustrations which use collage in a totally fun way that is much more creative than most board book art. also makes a fun gift for the adult sushi lover.
