Book Reviews of Fireproof

Book Review: Thanks for writing this book...
Summary: 5 Stars

Thanks for writing this book...

WOW! This book deserves 5 gold stars crusted with precious jewels. Rarely does a book like this come along. I have been told the movie (by the same name) is very good, also. I can hardly wait to see it. It is difficult to give this book justice; it is that good. I was late for work, because I was so caught up in the story. I did not want this book to end. More books of this caliber are needed.

The setting is Albany. Captain Caleb Holt is a firefighter that makes better decisions at work than at home. He lives by the firefighters adage: NEVER LEAVE YOUR PARTNER!! Unfortunately, he leaves the adage at the firehouse instead of bringing it home with him. His life at home with his wife of eight years was constant bickering. She had filed for a divorce. Caleb's father asked him to commit to a 40-day experiment: "The Love Dare." Caleb has to do nice, thoughtful things for his wife everyday for 40 days. At first, his heart was not in it, but once he began to take the challenge seriously, he realized he wanted to save his marriage. He took the challenge past the 40 days.

This is a must read for all couples, even if you have a good marriage. We need to realize that marriage is not disposable. We must take our marriage commitment seriously. Fireproof is well-written. The characters are endearing. Again, I declare this book a must read!

Book Review: A great read (from a reader who has not seen the movie or the study books)
Summary: 5 Stars

No, I don't live in a cave, but I have not seen the movie, nor have I picked up any of the study materials. My wife read the book and recommended it to me. I'm an avid reader but I was really not looking forward to it.

Why not?

Well, let's face it - there's some poorly made/written stuff out there that only sells because it's family friendly or because it is "Christian". So, I reluctantly picked this one up.

Boy, was I surprised. I was hooked from the first chapter and shot through this book in less than 48 hours. (I've reviewed hundreds of books on Amazon.com but I am hardly a speed reader - more like a dogged one).

The relationship between the husband and wife characters (Caleb and Catherine) is on the rocks but seems realistic (and is not overly romance novel-like). The firefighting scenes are exciting and well-done. Sure, you can see the end coming from 100 miles away but it was still well done.

I did roll my eyes at the "prize" scene at the end of the book - it was too much for my taste, but still a good book nonetheless. Well worth my time.

I have now seen the movie and can definitely say that the book is better. The movie is good, but the book is better.

Book Review: Awesome book!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I wasn't able to see the movie and had seen a few clips and the trailer of it. At first the book was diappointing because it IS the movie with exact words, phrases and body movements and gestures. But nevertheless, I could not put the book down! It got better and better as it went on. By the end I was crying. I feel if people see the movie and then read the book it won't be the same, because the book follows the movie exactly and you know what happens next. I do agree that they should have wrapped up the story with the doctor. Too many loose ends there. But in the end you can safely assume she "dumped" him real quick once things were patched up between Caleb and Catherine. I really want to see the movie but will have to wait till it comes out on DVD in Feb. I plan to do the Love Dare and can't wait to get the book in the mail! My marriage is pretty good but I want it to be like Caleb and Catherine's after they reconciled. I'm not looking for a boat or a renewal of our vows but the passion and happiness that Caleb and Catherine had in the end. I highly recommend this book especially for anyone who has not seen the movie. I would also recommend buying the Love Dare book at the same time.

Book Review: Love is a Decision, not just a feeling.
Summary: 5 Stars

I didn't expect such excellent film making and I was surprised by the wonderful balance. This film is major motion picture caliber and will have you crying, laughing, angry, happy, desperate and thankful. The potentially oppressive topic of divorce and infidelity is skillfully balanced with moments of comic relief, intense action sequences, and glimpses into more than just the everday lives of the characters, you are given insight into who they are as individuals. One of my favorite scenes occurs when the two main characters, headed for divorce, are talking with their friends and complaining about each other. It is a fast paced scene that cleverly demonstrates the very different ways a couple can perceive a situation. Pure genius.
The cinematography and acting are excellent and the storyline works. You will be thinking about this movie for days after you've seen it and it may just change your life. I recommend this film to anyone, married or not, because it is about more than achieving happiness in marriage, it's about the true meaning of love. It does everything a great movie should do, it entertains you and it makes you think.

Book Review: Thanks for the novel; can't wait to get my DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw the DVD Facing the Giants several times before reading the novel. I bought the novel when in the states intending to do the same thing; watch the DVD first a few times then read the book, as it would fill in what was missing in the DVD. I had some spare time in Bangkok last week, so I decided to read the novel and I'm so glad I did. The one thing that came out of it is how selfish I really am in a relationship with a woman in which we are contemplating marriage. I loved the details Eric Wilson added and didn't want to put the book down. I can't wait to see the DVD. I really think everyone needs to read this book and see the movie (in which order is not important). I think in this case a lot of questions I might have when watching my DVD will have already been answered in the novel. I also got The Love Dare, and I want to read it all the way through...hopefully I will soon have the opportunity to take it with the woman I mentioned above. I will look forward to your next novelization. Thank you and God bless you
