Book Reviews of Fire Study (Study, Book 3)Book Review: Slightly disappointing end to a great series Summary: 3 Stars--Some spoilers--
I have waited for the release of Fire study for a little over half a year after being thoroughly impressed by Poison Study and Magic Study. Maria Snyder is a great author and her character development was superb in the first two novels but Fire study had too many things going on at once.
Also, Tauno's character was not well-developed and his future betrayal was too obvious.
There were witty moments but at times the novel felt contrived...especially Valek's "death" and Yelena's time in the underworld.
Don't get me wrong this is a good book and the ending is sweet. But I can't help but feel let down after such promise was shown from the first two novels.
It's also a dilemma but so many things were repeated that readers of the previous novels already knew (Who opal was, Ferde, Cahil, Valek, The Commander, magic in general). This is necessary for new readers however.
Book Review: A pale and sad ending to a great series. Summary: 2 StarsOk, this series started out wonderfully and had great and interesting characters and a super story line. The first two books, Poison Study and Magic Study were pretty much divine. But this one, not so much. It almost seems like the author gave up (in my own humble opinion at least). The only reason I even bothered finishing this book was because I hated to leave the series so close to the end, I also believe that I was holding out in the hopes that it would get better, but was sadly disappointed. If you are one of those people who just has to know how it ends then by all means, try it for yourself. But truthfully you can get away with reading the first two and knowing that eventually everything works out in the end.
Book Review: I'm a satified reader Summary: 5 StarsIt's strange to see so many mixed reviews. I'm sadden to know that this is the ending of the series. I hadn't even realized it was a trilogy, yet I hope Snyder might consider to continue this world at least from another character's perspective. The whole world layout is absolutely fascinating and there is so much more that can be done with it.
I thought the ending brought about a good closure for this book. Snyder tied off many loose ends and answered the pressing unanswered questions. Our heroine found her niche, which really, what the whole series was about. In this book, Yelena works closely with Moon Man and Leif. Of course, her soul mate shows up to help out (strange how he knows just when to arrive)--usually right when a governing body wants her head in a noose. Overall, I enjoyed this series and would definately recommend it to an adventure loving fantasy reader.
Book Review: The Compulsive Reader's Reviews Summary: 5 StarsThere's no rest for Yelena, the popular heroine of Poison Study and Magic Study, in this spellbinding and fast paced third novel. Picking up from where Magic Study left off, Yelena is called away from The Citadel in Sitia by her Storyweaver, Moon Man, to capture the killer Ferde, and his rescuer, Cahil who are in the hands of the Daviian Vermin. But the Vermin lead Yelena, her brother, Moon Man and their group on a wild chase throughout the whole of Sitia, always one step ahead. They are smarter than what Yelena gives them credit for, and soon have easily influenced the Councilors and Master Magicians who rule Sitia.
Very quickly, Yelena and Leif go from predator to prey and must flee to Ixia in order to avoid execution. Cut off from her Sitian allies, and afraid to even use her own magic, Yelena finds herself walking a fine line. She must learn to accept help from others, to know her own limitations, begin to trust herself and her power, and ignite that stubborn streak of hers towards her foes if she's to preserve both of her countries' ways of life.
Once again, Snyder proves she knows how to please readers. Fire Study lives up to its name in this flaming hot and unforgettable read. Fast paced and quick witted from the beginning, you'll lose track of time throughout this page turner. Fire Study achieves an elite status that very few novels could ever live up to. All the favorites from Snyder's previous novels are present, from Ari and Janco to Perl and Esau, Cahil to Valek, Star to Fisk, and Nutty to Dilana; they're all wound into this suspenseful and splendid novel to make this third Study novel a glorious finale.
