Book Reviews of Finite and Infinite Games: A Vision of Life as Play and PossibilityBook Review: Is life more accurately viewed as participitating in a game? Summary: 4 Stars
Finite and infinite games is a very different kind of book. Carse does direct the reader to an unusual POV concerning or our engagement in social roles and instutional responsibilities. Much of is indeed palatable even though you feel like he's hitting you over the head with the propaganda like structure of the book. Also, I must admit that I found the book kind of inspirational. In a sneaky sort of way, it validates some of our doubts about levels of committment and sanity in our social endeavors. In the end its about just that, and seeks to redirect our efforts to the cause of aligning our self with our social destiny...Ha..but maybe I'm wrong! Is it just a wacked out Self-Help manifesto?
Book Review: Interesting!!!! Summary: 4 Stars
Carse's general idea / concept of infinite & finite games is very interesting but I must say that as I read through the book I can't help but feel that there seems to be a departure. The book eventually evolve to something quite distrubing and unsure (to me at least). Perhaps it's something we are all not too fimilar with, but something just don't seem right. I think I'll go along with Hampden-Turner & Trompenaars' take on finite&infinite games as in their "Mastering the infinite game" book. They seem to catch the essense. Yes,indeed it's the essense of Carse's idea which makes "finite & infinite games" interesting.
Book Review: The bifocals on the everyday lenses of life. Summary: 4 Stars
This book is worth its price simply for its elegant articulation of why artists don't fit in. And also for the bit about the difference between dramatic (the suspense) and theatrical (the suspense plus an audience). This quiet book will reassure and energize every quiet person who has not only marched to a different drummer but invited the drummer to join him for a drink and a chat ... This quiet book is actually quite subversive. I have several copies and loan them out frequently to anyone needing liberation from the squirrel cage of closed systems.
Book Review: A great brain workout Summary: 4 Stars
I am always looking for books that challange my ability to "wrap my brain around" abstract concepts and unusual philosophies; although I can't say that I agree with all of the author's assertions in this little gem (...but have you ever agreed with an entire philosophy book?), I will say that this book is one heck of a mental workout. Carse communicates abstractions in thinking with crystal clear, straight-forward analogies that often warrent going back for a second or third read.
Short and sweet, and the price is right!
Book Review: Thought provoking view of decisions, relationships, and self Summary: 4 Stars
Interesting and thought provoking. A bit scholastic but quite readable. Opens a whole new dimension of thought by catagorizing all decisions and relationships within the framework of finite games (those that must be won by someone) and infinite games (those that must never be won). Guaranteed to make you take at least a little closer look at yourself..
