Book Reviews of FingersmithBook Review: A genuinely sensational contemporary "sensation novel" Summary: 5 Stars
Since John Fowles's THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMEN three decades ago many British novelists have tried to recapture the style and feel of the great pageturners from the novel's heyday, the Victorian era, often with mixed results. Sarah Waters, like Charles Palliser, has carved out a career for herself almost wholly in this subgenre, and succeeds even more brilliantly than Palliser. Her latest novel, FINGERSMITH, beautifully recaptures the can't-put-it-down excitement of her literary forerunner Wilkie Collins, and narrates the story of a group of thieves who engineer a cruel plot to commit an heiress to a madhouse with real aplomb and skill. But the novel is even better than that: it brings out into the open social and cultural concerns Collins or Dickens could not have spoken about quite so directly (particularly pornography and same-sex eroticism), and shows great insight into the metafictional issues involved in reworking this subgenre of the sensation novel. I recommend this extremely highly.
Book Review: Become a Fingersmith Addict Summary: 5 Stars
This book, like the BBC Production which is available on DVD, are both 2 of the most wonderfully written book and screenplay. You can't help but get caught up in the romance between Maude and Sue. In fact I dare you to read the book or watch the DVD and then not want to start all over again.
This is all a credit to the wonderful Sarah Waters. She writes so that your mind can see exactly what she wants you to see, her descriptions, vivid, her plots wonderfully diverse, and her love story telling is out of this world.
Sue and Maude are 2 characters that will stay in your thoughts for days, maybe even weeks after.

Book Review: Loved this book. LOVED IT. Summary: 5 Stars
Sarah Waters is a rare find. I stumbled upon this book because I have been on a kick for Victorian Era books, movies, and TV shows.
The plot is basically that a con man convinces a pickpocket to go in on a scam to swindle a would-be rich young Lady. The pickpocket, or fingersmith, is to pose as the the rich Lady's personal maid, her Ladies' Maid, and convince her to marry the young man, the con man, that has come to woo her. Once married the con man can take the Lady's money, throw her in a madhouse, and give the fingersmith some three thousand pounds for her troubles in the plot. The problem comes when the fingersmith finds herself falling in love and becoming accidentally intimate with the Lady. The tension mounts as the fingersmith starts to have doubts about the con.
Book Review: You pearl! Summary: 5 Stars
Any critisisms aimed at Fingersmith have tended to focus on dislike for the twistiness of the plot. I can see that some people would not enjoy this - I know in some other twisty stories I've felt betrayed by the writer - but perhaps because I don't read much in this line, I enjoyed it all immensely. My interest was sustained throughout because certain things remained true throughout - the feelings between Sue and Maud most importantly. Best of all, it is a book which combines the thoughtful slowness of a book of ideas with the exciting plot of a book of action. The story, it is true, might not look out of place on a bad soap opera, but the book is pastiche (Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens) as much as anything else. Suspend your disbelief and you'll have the read of your year.
Book Review: Brilliant writing Summary: 5 Stars
I was enthralled with the book from page 1. But what I really loved about it was the language. The words lulled me into almost believing I was right there with the characters. I got totally lost in the language; but that's certainly not to take away from the story itself. The way the parts were organized, and then the big shocker--took my breath away. I remember I had an appointment I had to get to, and it was just about the time I had to leave when I ended the first part of the book. I literally yelped, "NO!" But maybe it was a good thing I had to stop there for a bit, because it gave me a chance to catch my breath, and go back over what had happened leading up to this. I couldn't wait to get back to reading it. Anyway, I thought it riveting, and an excellent read.
