Book Reviews of Finding Lost: The Unofficial Guide

Book Review: Perfect Companion Guide for "Lost" Lovers
Summary: 5 Stars

While previous guides for the serial drama "Lost" have often left something to be desired, the book "Finding Lost: The Unofficial Guide" more than makes up for it.

Nikki Stafford's attention to detail (and believe me, *all* "Lost" fans should have a great attention to detail) is thus far unparalleled in any other guide book.

You name it, this guide book has it. In addition to the usual episode synopsis, Stafford provides readers with all the information they can handle, including keeping track of the appearances of the "numbers", discussing theories, pointing out bloopers and continuity errors, illuminating connections, and just generally proving that she has watched way more "Lost" than any of us. In addition to all that, Stafford gives the low-down on each of the "Lost" cast members, before they became Losties.

Even if you have watched each episode of "Lost" 4 or 5 times, and think you have caught every little nuance and clue hidden within it, I guarentee you'll read this book and discover things you didn't catch, or never thought of. One of my favorite features in this book is the essay that details and explains everything on the "invisible" map that Locke briefly gets a glimpse of in season 2 during the episode "Lock Down" when the blast door comes down on top of his legs, and a black light switches on, illuminating the secret map.

Bottom line, this book is a must have for serious "Lost" fans. It would also be a great aid to anybody who is just now beginning to get into "Lost".

Book Review: Paradise found!
Summary: 5 Stars

While it is often difficult to gain perspective on a pop culture phenomenon, particularly in an era when an endless array of printed, video and online material is so readily accessible, the ground-breaking TV series LOST will be discussed, debated and deliberated upon for many years to come. For existing fans and the millions more who have yet to view or examine the show in detail, Nikki Stafford's FINDING LOST series is the essential guide to LOST's myriad characters, multi-layered plot lines and fascinating cultural references.

A survey of the other reviews here will clue you in to the endlessly satisfying content of each book in the series. This first volume covers Seasons 1 & 2 as characters are introduced, both in 'present time' on the Island following the crash of Oceanic 815 and through the use of the series of flashbacks in each episode focused on one of the castaways' backstories. Nikki's clear and concise analysis of each episode provides an indispensable guide to the complex narrative and places the evolving phenomenon of the series in a wider context.

For those who may have struggled initially to catch up to the challenging format of LOST, the FINDING LOST series will smooth the way to a richer, more enjoyable appreciation for a game-changing television show whose cultural impact will be more fully understood with time.

Book Review: Finding Lost by Nikki Stafford: Should be the Official Guide
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first got hooked on Lost, I was amazed at just how much information and how many references the show had in it. I was interested in finding out more about the background of the show and even had a look at the official guide to the show, but there wasn't much meat to it. I'd read books about television shows before, but like the official guides to The X-Files, they mostly just contained a list of characters, episode descriptions, and a few interesting tidbits.

Then this book came out. I couldn't believe just how much research had gone into Stafford's book. She talked about details I'd never even thought about for this show and gave a lot of true insights into many of the characters and episodes. Going into season two, I just sort of meandered along with the show, but after reading this book, I went into season three armed with an incredible amount of knowledge and a much better feel for the show. Put simply, this is one of the best guides to a television show I've ever seen.

I'm so glad that she's continued work on this series and is bringing another book out about season three, due out in October. I anticipate it eagerly and hope she continues for the rest of the series.

Book Review: A lucidly written "must-have" guide
Summary: 5 Stars

Finding Lost: The Unofficial Guide is a treasure trove of insights and foreshadowings revealed about the pop culture sensation that is the hit television series "Lost". Covering seasons 1 and 2, and extrapolating mysteries of season 3 therefrom, "Finding Lost" includes an in-depth episode guide, chapters on the real John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau as well as how they compare to fictional ones, biographies of all the major actors on the show, summaries of the show's many literary references, black-and-white photographs of the filming locations in Hawaii including a detailed map for dedicated Lost fans interested in undertaking their own tour in Oahu, and much more. A lucidly written "must-have" guide, and the perfect giftbook for "Lost" series enthusiasts! Also highly recommended are author Nikki Stafford's guides to other popular television shows: "Bite Me! An Unofficial Guide to the World of Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Uncovering Alias: An Unofficial Guide".

Book Review: Best episode guide so far
Summary: 5 Stars

I recieved this book as a Christmas gift and am completely amazed by the detail put into it. Every episode is explained at great length, but with NO spoilers, so you can read it even if you haven't seen that particular episode, without fear of knowing too much. Plus ever epi has some great side details including:

*Oops: blatant bloopers
*Nitpick: when something happened, was said, was acted out a certain way, when it went against what we know about the characters and their situation
*In translation: if Jin spoke in the episode, it's translated to English here
*Numbers: every occurrence of "The Numbers" in the episode
*Any Questions: questions this episode brings up or reiterates

....and much much more.
A definite buy for Lost fans.
