Book Reviews of Finding Fish: A MemoirBook Review: A Spectacular Memoir Summary: 5 Stars
This memoir took me through a lot of emotions as I read it over the course of three days. I appreciated my upbringing much more at the end of the book and I was hardly given a bed of roses. I am disheartened at the reviewers who didnt like this book because they felt as if Fisher didnt endure as much as many other children in the foster care system. That's exactly what made the book so compelling. Mental abuse over a long period of time can be just as devastating as physical abuse. Yes, there are kids who turn out worse or who may have had it harder bouncing from place to place but Antwone's story is incredible. He was broken down mentally and spiritually but he still endured. His story is simple but it's so powerful at the same time. Immediately after finishing his memoir I knew right away that it is a book that I would recommend to the young men in my mentor program. This insightful book is a great read, especially for young black men living in 2002 who think that the world owes them something. I am truly inspired by Antwone Fisher's work. Book Review: A Great Book on human strength and frailty Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book yesterday at one go and it left me feeling sad but not surprised. This kid lost his dad before he was born and his moms right afterwards. What impressed me most about this book was the author's sense of compassion for most of those responsible for his being born on this earth and being put into foster care. I am not a sentimental person as a rule but the scene with him meeting his mother at the end was very moving. I suspect this book would have had an even wider audience had the writer not been exposed to such a craven example of religious hypocrisy in the form of his god praising and child-hating foster mom. She was thought of as a good churchgoing lady by the community, but she was a wicked liar and thief. Don't look for a comforting message of faith in this book. You will be impressed by this awesome look at one man's personal strength and determination in the face of horrifying obstacles. I have been a ward of the state and know the feeling of not having a real family, of borrowing someone else's, and know that this 'fictive kinship' is no substitute for the real thing. Read this book.
Book Review: You Can't Put It Down Summary: 5 Stars
We just saw the movie a couple of weeks ago and it made me cry. Of course I had to have the book and just finished reading it tonight - I tried to meter it out (reading time) so I could get chores done too and make the book last, but today I must of read for 5 hours until I completed it. The fun parts were remembering some of the things from childhood I remember too, like Rat Patrol and bell bottom jeans. I was also born in 1959. I love the style of writing. It's like sitting in a room with Fisher and he's telling you everything first hand. For someone like me who had a more traditional upbringing, I tried to mirror those events he described on a timeline in my head, and then tried to remember where I was at the same time. The constant crap he was subjected too bothered me, and for good reason. The book got tears out of me too. This is a story of triumph. Good for human will and spirit. Good for Antwone Fisher and sharing his story.
Book Review: Who cried for the young black little girl Summary: 5 Stars
I enjoyed this movie it really touch my heart. I first watch it at the movies when it came out on video I ran and got it. I watch it every time it comes on cable also and when it don't outside my other favorite shows it is also watch on sundays I call it my Sunday After Church Movie. This movie reflexs on the life I had growing up as a little girl, but I was raised by my grandparents and at the age of 6 I was rape, my mother on drugs, and molested by my uncle. This movie really touch my heart so much. I am just happy that the real Antwone Fisher found his true family although his mother abandoned him I am sure she stills love him the same. If this memo or review every reach the real Antwone Fisher, just would like to tell him to keep his head up always and may God Bless him forever more.
Book Review: A magical child matures and we get to be in on it! Summary: 5 Stars
At first I resisted this book because it seemed to be written by an adult looking over his childhood from a very mature place. However, late in the book it is a revelatory experience to find that this is exactly what happened when an unfair accusation concerning Antwone at age 25 during his Navy experience 'caused' him to buy a dictionary, a thesorus and learn writing almost from scratch at this age. He soon found that he couldn't stop. Later he wrote this book that has become a best seller very deservedly. It is full of remarkable coincidences that could not be other than genuine because of hundreds of tiny clews that all add up to this person having been there. This is a profound work concerning human holistic Intelligence that Confirms Joseph Pierce's 'Magical Child Matures."
