Book Reviews of FileMaker Pro 10: The Missing ManualBook Review: Filemaler Basics Summary: 4 Stars
I've been using Access (and other databases) for many years and have now switched back to a Mac. Needing a good database, I got stuck in to Filemaker and found this manual a good introduction. It is very readable and will take you through from the basics to a building a reasonably complex application. If you're looking for a basic introduction to Filemaker, it's excellent -- if you're looking for a really in-depth application builder manual, I'd say that you might find the information here, but it will probably require significant digging to find it. There's at least one other manual which will help better with application building.
Book Review: Helpful Summary: 4 Stars
This book has been generally helpful and is better, but only a little better, than what is available from the program website. I would recommend it but for me I need to get in and "get my hands dirty" to play around with the program to be comfortable. I looked at other books and I preferred this one as it was more of a reference and less of an extended tutorial.
Book Review: Almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
Turns out what I needed most was a really good explanation and examples of JOIN TABLES. It seems that the real power of Filemaker just might reside in unlocking this mystery. And it remains a mystery.
Book Review: Great but .... Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered and received this book with anxious anticipation. Now, I am extremely disappointed to find that the promised 'on line' tutorial and other support files are not available. In fact, at the Oreilly web site, THERE IS NO MENTION OF FM 10 at all! A phone call to Oreilly resulted in an instruction to send an email to the author to 'get some of the files...' until they (the authors) can post the files. This begs the question "If the authors can write the book using the sample files, why can't they upload them"? Do they need a little instruction on FTP? Are they just lazy? Or, perhaps they just don't care. Shame on Amazon for selling his incomplete book.
Book Review: Disapointed Summary: 2 Stars
I was disapointed in this book. It didn't teach me anything I didn't know and there was nothing about instant web publishing in it, except how to set the database up for IWP, which anyone can figure out on their own. I find my old book, Special Edition: Using Filemaker 7 a better reference than this one. Unfortunately, I have Filemaker Pro 10 Advanced so my old book doesn't cover all the new features. I should have looked for the latest edition of that one.
