Customer Review: A very interesting look at today's "feminist" culture

Who exactly are "female chauvanist pigs"? Ariel Levy has several answers, and a few might surprise you. In her first book, Levy discusses the exploitation of women's bodies for the purpose of sex, power, and control. Some FCGs (shorthand for female chauvanist pigs) are the exploiters. They are the women who work behind the scenes at Girls Gone Wild, Playboy, and The Man Show. Others are an interesting kind of woman who fear nothing more than to be labeled as "girlie-girls" and so play a man's game in a man's world, which includes the degradation of said "girlie-girls." Still other FCGs are women involved in the "boi" lesbian culture. One lesbian woman whom Levi interviewed about dating bois commented that she felt nervous about her appearance around her lover and constantly strived to please him. "It's like I've come full circle," she said. I'll leave the other FCGs for you to discover on your own.
Levy's book is a very intriguing look at our culture and how women are perceived and perceive themselves. It is an excellent first-time book, and I enjoyed reading it thoroughly. Levy writes with humor and an admirable amount of poignancy, which is why I recommend this book to anyone interested in women's studies, feminism, or "raunch" culture.
