Book Reviews of Félix Vallotton (Gallery of the Arts)

Book Review: An interesting but - necessarily - limited overview of Vallotton's work
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is a concise introductory monograph on Vallotton's painting by Marina Ducray, author of the complete catalogue of Valloton's painting work ("Félix Vallotton (1865-1925): Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint", 5 Continents Editions 2005). The publication has been sponsored and promoted by the Felix Vallotton Foundation.

The book consists of two main parts: an overview of Vallotton's work and life, and a series of full-page, colour reproductions of selected works. The first part is a comprehensive, albeit necessarily superficial, presentation of Vallotton's evolvement as a painter through the different consecutive phases and styles he explored and mastered throughout his carreer, with emphasis on style and influences. Important biographical information and events in the painter's life are also included. The second part consists of a selection of 48 colour plates of works representative of each period, including an introductory section with specific short comments on each painting.

The book is in effect an introduction to and an overview of Vallotton's work, mainly addressed to the general public, and in this aspect the author manages to provide a very interesting first-time discovery and acquaintance with the painter's work. Nevertheless, obviously due to size and cost limits, the selection of works reproduced is somewhat restricted while the presentation of each painting remains limited and superficial.

Summary of Félix Vallotton (Gallery of the Arts)

F,lix Vallotton (1865-1925) was one of the greatest Swiss artists of the early 20th century. Until 1890, his painting remained faithful to academic teaching, and thus distant from the ferments of the avant-garde trends of post-impressionism; nevertheless, an originality in his essential and sharp drawing does stand out, and in some ways recalls Edgar Degas. He joined the Nabis group, and learned from them the fundamental canons of two-dimensional compositions and of arabesques, but he rejected the research typical of symbolism in favour of themes drawn from everyday life. While admiring Paul C,zanne, he turned to Henri Rousseau and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec for a manner in which to depict daily life with linear clarity. His stark paintings from the post-Nabi period were respected for their technical qualities, but the severity of his style was frequently criticised. In its uncompromising character his art prefigured the New Objectivity and has a further parallel in the work of Edward Hopper. This
