Book Review: A great resource and self help guide
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is an excellent self help guide for anyone with the symptoms as described per the title. The title could have easily been "Got Fatigue, Anxiety and Brain Fog?" If you are exploring these topics for the first time or if you are a long time patient being treated for these symptoms, this book is a good choice. The authors, Richard and Karilee Shames are a husband/wife, doctor/nurse team that have been treating people holistically with endocrine problems for over 25 years.

The Shames's take an approach that one size does not fit all and every patient should be an active participant in their treatment. They openly encourage you to work with more than one health care provider and that success comes when you take charge of your treatment. The Authors clearly recognize that feeling fat, fuzzy or frazzled may be caused by any one or a combination of thyroid, adrenal or sex hormones imbalances. They refer to each of these three areas as an Endo-type and refer to them as the three legs of a stool. If one leg (or Endo-type) is off, the stool does not work well. The book provides guidance using simple home tests to establish your dominant Endo-type. Since all three Endo-types or "stool legs" are interrelated, when one is helped, the other two will begin to function better. Often symptoms associate with the other Endo-types are alleviated or eliminated. Their approach is to treat only one Endo-type at a time and make one change at a time. Careful observation is made before any additional changes are introduced. After a period of adjustments and observations your symptoms hopefully are alleviated or eliminated. You will periodically need to reevaluate your symptoms and possibly address other Endo-types per additional self testing or lab testing.

There are clearly written chapters on each of the three Endo-types. At the end of each chapter are concept summary notes and an action summary plan. This is nicely done. Often additional testing is suggested to help pin point or confirm your original self test results. Some tests will require a doctor's order while others like saliva testing can be ordered on your own ([...]). Each chapter provides practical dietary and supplemental suggestions allowing you to take control. Generic and specific OTC supplements are recommended. The Shames's disclose they have business relationships with some of the recommended vendors. However they do not disclosure which vendors. By visiting their websites ([...] & [...]) I could clearly see they currently have a relationship with the supplement company Xymogen.

If you are on or want to be on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), some guidance is offered. Of course you need to work with an open minded healthcare provider to get prescriptions and relevant blood work filled.

Overall this is a very good self help book in an area that is not often handled well by western allopathic medicine. The authors recognize this and offer this book as a practical starting point to help you evaluate what the issues are and get your endocrine system working better. There are many books out there that will only address one Endo-type, like the thyroid or menopause. This book is different in that it evaluates all three Endo-types relative to each other. Once you establish what Endo-type is dominant for you, specific actions, and recommendations are provided.

The Shames's are experts in a field that is controversial and still not well enough understood. The reality is, some people may not improve enough by following the guidance in this book. I am sure the Shames's are continuing to learn additional and better ways to diagnose and treat feeling fat, fuzzy or frazzled patients. I hope in the future the authors will consider a revision to this book or better yet a new book that will include the newest findings, therapies, and provide more detail in a similar layout.

For those who currently want to do additional research and get more details about specific areas,I suggest the following.

If you have a known thyroid or adrenal problem I would recommend the self help book" Stop the Thyroid Madness" by J. Bowthorpe (website [...] ). This book focuses on a wide variety of thyroid and adrenal issues. If you feel you need to address either of these "Endo Types" this book is a good compliment.

If you think you may have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or Fibromyalgia, I would highly recommend reading "From Fatigued to Fantastic" by Dr. Teitelbaum (website [...] ). Dr. Teitelbaum provides some excellent guidance in areas related to sleep issues, CFS and Fibromyalgia.

Feeling Fat, Fuzzy or Frazzled is an excellent self help book that meets a clear need in today's modern society and I hope it is the only source you will need to get back to 100%. However, it may only take you part of the way back and in which case you should complement it with other sources and approaches. Either way, the information inside it is well worth the read.

Summary of Feeling Fat, Fuzzy, or Frazzled?: A 3-Step Program to: Restore Thyroid, Adrenal, and Reproductive Balance, Beat Hormone Havoc, and Feel Better Fast!

For the 33 million Americans who feel sluggish, spacey, and stressed out daily, Feeling Fat, Fuzzy, or Frazzled? is the first book to address the delicate balance among the thyroid, adrenal, and reproductive glands?which can make the day-to-day difference between feeling awful and feeling good. Long-term, if left untreated, this imbalance can cause heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, infertility, and severe menopause.

Authored by an expert physician/nurse team, the book offers readers: an innovative program to identify their particular hormone-related metabolic disorder; a ?5-day jumpstart program? to help alleviate weight gain, low energy, or frayed nerves fast; and a long-term plan to achieve optimal health.
