Book Reviews of Fearless (The Lost Fleet, Book 2)

Book Review: Character-driven and extremely readable military sci-fi
Summary: 5 Stars

Jack Campbell offers readers two great reasons to love this book (and the entire Lost Fleet series): unique space combat and an interesting hero.

Campbell's battles resemble ponderous navel engagements rather than high-flying dogfights. Governed by the laws of physics, the action is unlike anything I've seen or read before in the genre.

The protagonist, John "Black Jack" Geary is a man out of time, revived after 100 years in suspended animation. Now he must lead a fleet of ships trapped behind enemy lines and struggling to survive. The author gives us access Geary's innermost thoughts and fears and questions, creating a compelling character.

The book moves quickly and while this book is entertaining in its own right, one can sense that bigger and better things are to come.

Book Review: Fast paced action
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are a space opera fan ala Weber's Honor Harrington series you'll love this one. It's fast paced, well written, and gives you plenty of action. The only negatives are similar to Weber's Harrington always thinking how unattractive she is, and why does everyone worship her? We get it! In this case everyone in the fleet (almost everyone) worships Black Jack Geary, and he hates that. Ok, Mr. Campbell we understand, please move on. The author also takes into consideration actual time problems of doing battle in space where light speed means that you are looking at things that happened in the past. So you don't know if your battle plan is working out for minutes or hours later. Add the hint of a mystery race manipulating mankind and you've got a winner! Can't wait for the next one!!

Book Review: Book Two . . . Just as good!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the second book in the Lost Fleet series that follows the adventures of Black Jack Geary. I loved the first book and I loved this one, for the same reasons mainly. The story is original and intersting, you believe the characters are real people with real decisions to make, and great action. Jack Campbells view of space travel and space warfare much more like I'd actually expect to see. Space may free you from gravity, but not physics. This book is also very character driven for a military sci-fi book or really any sci-fi book. That is, with out doubt, my favorite part of the book. Fearless is a very interesting and fast read. Don't take that the wrong way, fast in a good way. The story doesn't suffer, but you'll actually have time to read it!

Book Review: The one that hooked me
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is the one responsible for igniting my quest for more science fiction books. What drew me to it in the first place is the cover art. If there had been the typical sci-fi spaceships type cover, I never would have read the summary. I wasn't into that kind of sci-fi. If I did read it, it would always have to do with time travel on Earth--never anything space related. This book changed all that.

The main character is strong and likable right from the beginning. I love the premise that he's literally a legend in his own time and I also love that he's uncomfortable with the hero label.

The battle scenes are amazing and I began to look forward to them, which totally surprised me.

Book Review: A great follow up novel
Summary: 5 Stars

When Captain Geary picks up some Alliance POWs the last thing he expects is find he has saved another charismatic war hero from the past - one who has retained enough past reputation to encourage a revolt in his fleet when Geary suggest heading deeper into enemy space.

I really enjoyed this novel. Out of the recent military SciFi I have read in the last few years, for me, this series stands out because the stories are not excessively padded and Geary himself is very easy to like and the space battles hold more interest than many I've read. You also WANT to know what happens to Geary - just like I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.
