Book Reviews of Fearless Fourteen (Stephanie Plum, No. 14) (Stephanie Plum Novels)Book Review: One of the better books in the series -- I had some laugh out loud moments Summary: 4 Stars
I don't know why some people had such a low opinion of this book -- as some other reviewers have pointed out, get a grip! This isn't Shakespeare -- it's just an amusing book to read when you need something light and funny. And far from using the same old things over and over again, I thought there was quite a few new situations (the problem with the briefcase, for example) that were very funny. Stephanie seems to be maturing -- she's resisting Ranger and developing a steadier relationship with Joe, and she seems to have developed some detecting skills that were missing in earlier volumes. Moreover, although she still skirts the law on occasions, she's often the voice of reason -- it's now Lula that serves as the outrageous one. Plum seems to be using her brain more than in earlier books and her car problems have morphed into something new and less extreme.
I also thought the plotting of this book was better than many of the earlier books in the series. There are some new characters, including a group who are really into on-line game-playing, a psychic stalker, and an aging star with a declining career despite a big bust.
All in all, don't expect this book to be great literature -- take it for what it is -- a good way to amuse yourself when you need something light, funny, and distracting. I liked the book well enough that I'm not going to pass it on -- I'll keep it for rereading at a later date.
Book Review: The same Plum gang in a new adventure Summary: 4 Stars
Lots of people reviewing the book seem to want character development. I happen to like the Plum gang just as they are. What I want in each book is some adventure and some laughs, and this book gave me both. The characters are pretty much the same as they were in the last several books. Stephanie has gotten better at dealing with skips, and while she doesn't do a lot of bounty hunting in this book, when she does, she almost seems competent. Lula is also pretty much the same, though her relationship with Tank is taken up a notch. There is a lot of Lula in this book, and I get a kick out of her so I was happy. There isn't a whole lot of time for several of the other characters, though everyone makes an appearance, but that is because Stephanie and Lula spend a lot of time dealing with the main adventure and a sub plot that goes along with that adventure. For me, it is about getting to visit with some old friends once a year. I like that we can pick up right where we left off, have some laughs, and enjoy a story.
Book Review: Newbie perspective Summary: 4 Stars
I'm surprised to find such a raging controversy here about the Stephanie Plum series. I recently asked friends to recommend something funny to read -- the Stephanie Plum series was among the answers. After reading One for the Money, I was hooked -- and have read the entire series through Fearless Fourteen in just over a month! I found exactly what I was looking for -- laugh out loud action, characters, and dialog, with a bonus of occasional steaminess. Is it sometimes silly? Yes, but that's why I'm reading it! If you're looking for something literary, this is not it. Reading the books one after the other, I really appreciated the variation of characters, both new and recurring. This is Evanovich's strength, I feel. I did notice some occasional sloppiness/inconsistency that should have been cleaned up by proofreading or editing or whoever -- this should be addressed, but was minor to the reading experience. If you are looking for a funny, quick, entertaining read, Stephanie Plum could be your woman!
Book Review: Shameless Fun Summary: 4 Stars
I was really glad to have a break from the bipolar love life of Stephanie Plum. I had a chance to breath, chuckle and belly laugh at the crazy people milling around the Burg. Stephanie is actually the sane one in this book, and I like her so I was glad to see her being relatively less of a train wreck than everyone else. Everyone else is still there and still the same, but Stephanie seems to have matured. I was a little sorry The Cop boyfriend didn't get saddled with a teenage love child - he deserved to and it might have made his character mature a bit. But I still enjoyed the book very much and I look forward to the next one.
Book Review: Janet and Stephanie ARE REAL PLUMS. Summary: 4 Stars
I agree with the person who said knocking these books are really sorta dumb. I am an older guy that has always enjoyed mysteries and funny books . The Plum series has both and I really have fun reading them. I have now ordered all fifteen books in the series from here and so far I have finished three and each one was fun to read. They are not boring novels that put you to sleep and they are not going to win any pulitizer awards but they are enjoyable. All I can say Janet is KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
