Book Review: A Retelling of Ovid's Metamorphosis

Interestingly, one of the great sources of Greek mythology comes from the Roman poet Ovid's epic poem, "The Metamorphosis". Ovid's examines his theme of transformation by retelling two hundred and fifty myths. By the time Ovid composed his great poem, the Greek cosmology had almost been entirely adopted into the official Roman religion. One of the main critiques of this book is that Mary Pope Osbourne has used the Roman names for the Greek gods. This only makes sense to me since Pope Osbourne is engaged in a retelling of Ovid's Metamorphosis. Granted the names are bit confusing but not so much that the confusion cannot be overcome with a little work.
Mary Pope Osbourne has become a famous children's author because of her Magic Treehouse series of books. She understands her audience and has crafted her mythological stories to fit her audience's reading level. As a parent, I thought the book was well written and I found it to be quite enjoyable. For anyone who enjoys this book, I would highly recommended Mary Pope Osbourne's mulitple volume retelling of the Odyssey. Both the Greeks myths and the Odyssey are foundational stories which every educated person should be familiar with. It is never too early to introduce these stories to children.
